Those using the LGBTQ service were more likely to encounter certain challenges with the service compared to those using the general 988 service. These include double the call abandonment rate (21% v. 11%) and substantially longer call wait times (with monthly averages about double that of the general line). https://lnkd.in/eWaTW6pK

Did you know: ➡️ LGBT adults are more likely than non-LGBT adults to describe their mental health and emotional well-being as either “fair” or “poor” ➡️ LGBT adults are more likely to report being always or often anxious, depressed, or lonely over the past 12 months ➡️ About two-thirds of LGBT adults say they have experienced at least one form of discrimination in their daily life at least a few times in the past year compared to 40% of non-LGBT adults It's important to acknowledge these facts—and it's even more important that we address the root of these disparities. Luckily, there is an LGBTQ 988 service that aims to help LGBTQ people with their mental health struggles. However, about 8 in 10 LGBT and non-LGBT adults report that they have heard little or nothing about this resource! That's why it's so important this pride month to spread awareness about this helpful resource. #PrideMonth #MentalHealth #988LGBTQService

"Rates of suicide attempts dropped to less than half when LGBT+ youth had access to high social support. Theories about the mechanism for this relationship include: day-to-day emotional support, protection from real or perceived violence, connection to others, and stimulation of cognitive function through social connection. So now I’m thinking about an emotionally supportive community, where day-to-day interactions foster feelings of protection and connection to others. Maybe a place that understands and discusses concepts such as mental health in community settings. That sounds pretty familiar." Clinician Derrick talks about Pride, LGBTQIA+ mental health, and the importance of supportive community on today's blog.

Just published - "KFF reviewed new public performance data from the 988 crisis line and identified high demand for the services designed to meet the needs of LGBTQ and young adults. We also found people using the LGBTQ service were more likely to encounter certain challenges, including double the call abandonment rate (21% v. 11%) and substantially longer wait times—typically about double the wait time for 988 overall." "LGBT adults are more likely than non-LGBT adults to describe their mental health and emotional well-being as either “fair” or “poor” (39% v. 16%) and more likely to report being always or often anxious, depressed, or lonely over the past 12 months. Especially concerning is that, in 2021, 45% of LGBTQ high school students reported having seriously considered suicide during the past year. However, despite greater need, LGBT people are more likely to report going without a needed mental health services than non-LGBT people. Further, about two-thirds (65%) of LGBT adults say they have experienced at least one form of discrimination in their daily life at least a few times in the past year compared 40% of non-LGBT adults and experiences of stigma and discrimination contribute to mental health challenges. In addition, it has been well documented that anti-LGBTQ policy environments can negatively impact the community’s well-being and debates over LGBTQ rights are currently playing out in the courts as well as on the political stage."...

A heartfelt thanks to my friends at The Trevor Project for sharing a glimpse into my role as a crisis counselor on the Trevor Lifeline in recognition of #VolunteerAppreciationWeek.
