Why do we provide STEM education programs for preschool and elementary learners? Quite simply, it lays the foundation for a lifelong journey of exploration, problem-solving, and critical thinking that paves the way to their confidence in exploring STEM related careers after graduation. By introducing STEM at an early age, we assist educators in fostering curiosity, creativity, and a natural inclination to inquire about the world that gives young children the ability to work through problems. An early foundation in STEM cultivates essential skills such as observation, experimentation, and logical reasoning, empowering young minds to understand how things work and encouraging them to ask questions. When engaging in hands-on activities and playful learning experiences, children develop fundamental skills that prepare them for future challenges. Early exposure to STEM not only nurtures a passion for learning but also equips children with the tools they need to become adaptable problem solvers, laying a sturdy groundwork for their academic and professional futures. In a new piece for The National Interest, I argue that America's inadequate STEM education has become a genuine national security concern. We won't remain a global innovation powerhouse unless we seriously strengthen STEM education, especially at the K-12 level. As I argue, this will largely be a matter of improving K-12 education overall, particularly at the state level. Still, there are steps that Congress, the Department of Education, and the White House’s Committee on STEM Education should take as well. https://lnkd.in/grMdkaPT

Edifying Teachers is pleased to join the Beyond100K national network. Extending the successful '100Kin10' work led by Talia Milgrom-Elcott, Beyond100K unites leading organizations to co-develop and implement solutions that will end the STEM teacher shortage by 2043, especially for those most excluded from STEM opportunities. Beyond100K recently engaged 600 young people, who shared their STEM stories. "They told us that when they felt excluded from STEM, they put aside their STEM dreams. When they belonged, their natural curiosity for STEM could take hold, and they pursued and persisted in STEM through college and beyond. Teachers create classrooms of belonging." Find out more about the 'Uncommission,' the Beyond100K map illustrating key challenges and levers, and the commitments we and our fellow partners have made to being integral to this solution! https://lnkd.in/eQGYcD3e

Our Founder & CEO, Shiloh McLeod gives insight into the motivation behind creating Stemmed for Success.
Following my graduation this past fall, I can’t help but to reflect on my collegiate journey. Aside from being overwhelmingly proud of my accomplishments, I also recognize the obstacles I faced during my five year career. As we know, college isn’t easy for anyone, especially for those who are starting with less. As someone from the inner city of Philadelphia, and a product of the public school system, I would be remiss if I didn’t admit that I wonder what my path may have been given different circumstances or better resources. With that being said, I’ve decided to create a nonprofit organization aiming to alleviate the concerns many students face in relation to their educational needs. Stemmed for Success is a nonprofit organization for underrepresented high school students with the intent to major in STEM related fields. We will provide students with a variety of aid via fellowship and scholarship opportunities, along with free programs to ease their college journey. I am extremely excited to begin this journey and help the next generation of STEM students make a difference in the world. Please feel free to follow Stemmed for Success and share any updates with high school students you know.

My blog on King's Think Tank looks at the UK government's push to align STEM education with the future demands of the UK workforce, aiming to become a science and technology leader by 2030. We zoom in on the "Maths to 18" initiative to see why it's important to weave STEM into early education. We also look at the most important hurdle the program faces: a scarcity of qualified STEM teachers. We also assess some of the potential solutions to the problem, including improved pay and ongoing professional growth. https://lnkd.in/dRzKWTzX

What a STEM Quad assembled to apprise the National Academies' Committee on PreK-12 STEM Education Innovations recently. L to R - Jeremy Babendure of AZ. SciTech Institute, Michael Vargas of AZ STEM Acceleration Project, Lee Meadows of Alabama STEM, and yours truly repping Iowa and the 2019-2023 Fed. STEM Plan. Among our oeuvre of works cited, our collective upshot to the committee was the moral and economic imperative of STEM education for all. The Committee will “… explore the impact and scalability of STEM ecosystem approaches, state-led STEM initiatives, and long-term content or resource-based initiatives” and report to Congress (thanks CHIPS Act!).
