Through giving employees the freedom to choose where (and often also when) to perform their tasks, effective hybrid work policies are said to create opportunities for employees to gain more control over their workflow and work environment, making these more conducive to personal productivity and well-being (e.g., saving time on commutes, working at more convenient times and with less distractions). However, just because organizations introduce hybrid work policies doesn’t mean that all employees are necessarily going to engage in it – and a lot of that may have to with how much control employees have over their workflow and work environment in the first place. The results of our quasi-experimental study with 699 employees in the manufacturing industry showed that the introduction of an organizational hybrid work policy was able to improve workflow and work environment-related demands (e.g., workflow interruptions) for those that engaged in hybrid work – but that this was a select group of employees, characterized not only by high levels of workflow interruptions but also higher levels of autonomy. Simply introducing a hybrid work policy is not a guaranteed success – organizations also have to see to it that their employees have the necessary work conditions to properly engage in hybrid work in the first place. This could include participatory workshops, in which teams and managers collectively discuss what needs to happen so that individuals can engage in hybrid work and still function well as a team. At Quantum Workplace, our panel research has indicated that 50% of employees prefer hybrid work, with 37% selecting Remote-only and just 13% selecting workplace-only options. That ~50% has held relatively steady in our research since the beginning of 2023, but I still commonly hear challenges from both my customers and their employees about how to best capitalize on those #hybrid workplace moments. It's not as simple as just picking designated in-office days. The in-office moments that tend to resonate most with employees are those that promote greater collaboration and connection between team members, while still allowing for flexibility and autonomy to determine when and how often they show up in-office. #employeeengagement
