Safe System Snippet – Same Vehicle, Different Safety Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) tests are undertaken on standard vehicles, without bullbars or other accessories fitted.  As part of the ANCAP rating, a vehicle must provide protection to pedestrians and other vulnerable road users that may be struck by the vehicle. ANCAP’s testing protocols for pedestrian impacts are not designed to assess impacts with bullbars or other frontal protection devices. The fitting of a bullbar is likely to significantly degrade the safety outcome when the vehicle strikes a pedestrian, cyclist or motorcyclist. -------------  Sign up to our mailing list for more snippets and news: https://lnkd.in/gXsAeAa9    #roadsafety #trafficsafety #pedestriansafety #cyclistsafety #motorcyclistsafety #safesystem #SafeSystemSnippet

I have a genuine question for the road safety experts out there: how can a ute with such a high front recive 5 star safety rating and 88% score for vulnerable road user protection?

Australians have this fascination for fitting bull bars, it’s almost as though it’s not a real ute without one. Modern cars do not need bull bars - when developing the Ranger, Ford used an anthropomorphic model of a kangaroo to crash test the vehicle at 100kmph. It survived and remained driveable. Bull bars do not make you safer in a crash. I was responsible for commissioning independent Crash Lab tests which showed on a HiLux it actually resulted in worse outcomes. Bull bars: - will not give you the protection you think they will - may result in worse damage outcomes from tubulars shearing and penetrating the engine compartment - you will end up paying to repair/replace more items - may compromise the crush failure mode of the vehicle designed to protect occupants - may compromise finely tuned air bag safety systems - will result in worse outcomes for occupants in a vehicle you hit in a T-bone crash - will result in worse outcomes for pedestrians - and that stupid lump on your bumper adds weight which impacts your suspension and the extra weight costs you more in fuel to lug it around. Save yourself the money, the damage and a life.
