Over the last few months, I have been lucky enough to work on a project that means a lot to me! This is a subject that I believe is still not talked about enough in most workplaces. My goal was to bring more awareness and accessibility for employees to get the help that they may needed. This was accomplished by compiling a list of the top hotlines used in our area then creating posters to be displayed throughout the building. While going through this project I learned some facts that fueled my drive to complete this project to the best of my ability. I will share just a few of them that I learned here with you. - Every 40 seconds someone loses their life to suicide. - 10 million adults experience abuse annually in the US. - Almost 20% of veterans have thought about suicide, and nearly 15% have tried to commit suicide (As of 2017). - There are over 433,000 cases of sexual assault or rape annually in the U.S. among people ages 12 and older - 32.6 deaths per 100,000 standard population due to drug abuse. This is a topic that I believe needs to be more widely discussed in the workplace. To better help support and protect or employees and even our leadership. Some ways that I believe that this could be done include having a workshop to inform leaders on how to help in these situations, having hotlines prominently displayed throughout the building, and having HR knowledgeable in different aspects of workplace safety. While this is such a hard topic, I am excited to continue to grow and learn it better so that I can be better prepared as a co-worker and person.

Workplaces have a role in supporting people going through periods of poor mental health, but they aren't responsible for "fixing" people. Support is the key. Speaking at the 23rd World Congress on Safety & Health at Work, Tom Oxley said the first step for management is to show curiosity and to ask their people – itself an implicit statement of caring. "Your people don't expect you to have all the answers, but your organisation's care-giving starts with a willingness to listen." He said that 50% of lost time is due to mental health. "If you were running a machine that was responsible for 50% of your lost time, you would put a lot of energy into putting it right." Getting it right pays big dividends. He recalled the sales director at a large FMCG company who had time off work with depression and wrote to his sales team about what he was going through, saying he owed it to them to be truthful. "He opened up the conversation for this big department. They're still talking about it six years later." In another company – bricks, sand, cement, noise, "tough blokes" – the manager decided to stop work for a period each Friday for a collective cup of tea. The only rule? You're not allowed to talk about work. The Friday cuppa has led people to open up about personal issues and has had a spiral effect, one outcome being fewer safety incidents. (Abridged from a story in today's edition of Safeguard Update newsletter)

In the heart of P2BS, we've rewritten the narrative of workplace dialogue. Our talks no longer merely skim the surface of health and safety; they now courageously venture into the depths of mental resilience and emotional well-being. This transformative shift sees us addressing topics once whispered about—suicide, depression, and the like—because we understand that true safety isn't just physical; it's about nurturing our minds and hearts. We've embraced this evolution wholeheartedly, knowing that by nurturing ourselves emotionally, we create a foundation for genuine safety and thriving at work. #proud2bsafe #p2bs #p2bsuk #safety #safetyspeaker #healthandsafety #healthandsafetyuk #safetyleadership #wellnessmatters #motivatesafety #safetyatwork #healthfirst #motivationalspeaker #motivationalsafetyspeaker #reel #reels #healthreels #safetyreels #healthandsafetyreels #reelssafety #safetyadvocate #awareness
