We are excited to share our latest publication news: Our colleague Achilleas Grigoriadis, PhD led a collaborative study, titled "Particulate and Gaseous Emissions from a Large Two-Stroke Slow-Speed Marine Engine Equipped with Open-Loop Scrubber under Real Sailing Conditions," now published in the prestigious Atmosphere journal. This groundbreaking work, involving many talented coauthors, reveals a significant reduction in SO2 emissions, although an increase in particulate number emissions was also observed. These findings enhance our understanding of open-loop scrubber performance and their implications for marine pollution. Full paper: https://lnkd.in/dvFBbVcx Join us in advancing sustainable marine technologies for a cleaner future! #CollaborativeResearch #MarineEmissions #OpenLoopScrubbers #AirQuality #EnvironmentalImpact
🌍✨ Exciting Publication Alert! 📚🚢 We are thrilled to announce the publication of our latest paper titled “Particulate and Gaseous Emissions from a Large Two-Stroke Slow-Speed Marine Engine Equipped with Open-Loop Scrubber under Real Sailing Conditions” in the prestigious Atmosphere journal. Our study aims to shed light on the emissions profile of open-loop scrubbers in marine engines during real-world sailing conditions aboard a 300-meter containership. Key findings reveal a notable decrease in SO2 emissions, albeit with an observed increase in particulate number emissions. These results are pivotal in enhancing our understanding of open-loop scrubber performance and their implications for marine pollution. They are poised to enrich emission and air quality models, crucial for estimating environmental impacts. 📖 Dive into the full paper for detailed insights: https://lnkd.in/dvFBbVcx Join us in advancing the discourse on sustainable marine technologies and their role in shaping a cleaner future for the environment. 🌊🚢 #Ships #Ports #Maritime #Marinepollution #Emissionsreduction #Scrubbers #Airpollution #Environment #EmissionsResearch #AtmosphereJournal #Sustainability #Research #LAT

📣 A new #30by30 tracker from SkyTruth has recently been launched, showing that just 2.8% of the global ocean is fully or highly protected. https://lnkd.in/dj4xgnMU This draws on the detailed work of ProtectedSeas and the Marine Conservation Institute's MPAtlas, and contrasts with the World Database on Protected Areas, which reports higher marine protection coverage but does not distinguish whether MPAs are implemented or simply designated. Congratulations to MPA Europe team members Qianshuo Zhao and Mark Costello whose global modelling of 30by30 using a #bigdata approach is included in the new tracker's data layers for priority areas to protect. We are using a similar systematic #conservation planning approach to map the optimal networks of MPAs across Europe's seas which encompass the maximum range of #biodiversity and #bluecarbon stores. Greater focus on implementing high quality MPAs is needed to deliver meaningful #marineprotection and reduce the number of paper parks. #msp #ocean action is #climateaction #measurewhatmatters #marineprotectedareas

In other news. Have you heard that Climeworks has completed the construction of their latest Direct Air Carbon Capture facility in Iceland? The plant, named Mammoth, is the largest in the world and is capable of capturing up to 36,000 tons of carbon annually. Considering the average carbon footprint in the UK is 6 tonnes per person, this is equivalent to offsetting the carbon footprint of 6,000 people. It’s a significant step in the right direction. However, when we look at the bigger picture, it’s just a drop in the ocean. Despite this, I still applaud this progress. Although it may seem inconsequential, the technological advances being made and tested at scale will lay the foundation for improved technology in the future. This will enable us to better utilize Direct Air Capture as one of many strategies to combat climate change and reduce carbon in the air.
