🌟 Breaking new ground in sustainable shipping! 🌍 Thrilled to share that Professor Peilin Zhou from University of Strathclyde introduced our SAFeCRAFT Project at the Europe-Korea Conference on Science and Technology 2024 (#EKC2024) in Coventry, UK! 🚢 SAFeCRAFT is dedicated to researching #decarbonization #fuels for #waterborne #transport, aiming to revolutionize the maritime industry over the next 4 years. While we are just getting started, the response to our vision and goals has been incredible. ♻️ 🌿 🎯 Professor Zhou’s presentation, titled “Research and Development of Decarbonisation Fuels’ Application for Waterborne Transport”, outlined our roadmap and the #innovative work ahead. 🚢 Task 7.1: Final Results of GAP Analysis on Safety Models and Regulations for Hydrogen Carriers 🌍 👉 As hydrogen continues to play a vital role in achieving #decarbonization and #netzero targets, the maritime transport of hydrogen carriers like Compressed Gaseous Hydrogen (#CGH2), Liquid Hydrogen (#LH2), Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (#LOHC), and #Ammonia is becoming increasingly critical. However, #safety concepts for #handling, #storing, and #transporting these fuels are still underdeveloped, posing major challenges. ⚠️ 🎯 As part of the #SAFeCRAFT Project, Task 7.1 led by University of Strathclyde investigated the properties of these hydrogen carriers, identifying key #hazards and reviewing the #IMO IGF Code and Classification Societies’ guidelines. The findings highlight the regulatory limitations for handling CGH2, LH2, LOHC, and Ammonia. 💼 Key findings: ➡ No existing guidelines provide detailed safety requirements for these fuels. 🔍 ➡Effective leakage detection and monitoring methods are essential to reduce risks related to flammability and explosiveness. 🚨 ➡More research is needed to find materials resistant to #hydrogen permeation. 🧪 🗝 🔓 To address these gaps, the development of a comprehensive #RiskAssessment methodology is recommended to ensure safe handling practices. 🚢 Progress Update: Task 8.2 – Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Alternative Systems in SAFeCRAFT 🌍 🎯 In the SAFeCRAFT project, Task 8.2, led by the University of Strathclyde, focuses on the #Life #Cycle #Cost #Assessment (#LCCA) of Sustainable Alternative Fuels (SAF). This task is critical for illustrating how #SAF solutions contribute to the circular #economy in #maritime operations.🔄🛳️ 📝 The analysis tracks the cash flow across the entire lifecycle: from raw material exploitation and production to system construction, installation, operation, and maintenance—right through to end-of-life scenarios. We are also assessing CAPEX, OPEX, maintenance, dismantling, and recycling costs for alternative fuel systems. 💰🏭⚙️ 💡 End-of-life scenarios will explore how varied dismantling and #recycling technologies impact the circular economy by analysing reusable parts and recycling benefits.
