ℹ A clear demand signal is vital to enable the #UK #shipbuilding industry to invest in capability. To support this, we work cross-government with colleagues in Whitehall, devolved, and local governments to present a thirty-year pipeline – a forward look at the public sector’s anticipated order book for surface vessels and support contracts. https://lnkd.in/eZRFp9_j ✅ Expect some larger industry engagement on several of the major programmes listed in the pipeline coming this year. The Spanish government (La Moncloa) has made a significant stride in upgrading its firefighting capabilities by announcing the acquisition of seven De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited DHC-515 aircraft on April 19th, 2024. Valued at $375 million Euro, this investment is part of a broader initiative to bolster firefighting efforts across the nation. This procurement falls under the RescEU framework, a collaborative effort among European nations bordering the Mediterranean, aimed at enhancing mutual aid in crisis situations. Spain’s commitment to this initiative includes purchasing five DHC-515 aircraft directly, with an additional two aircraft funded through RescEU contributions. The RescEU initiative, with a budget exceeding 600 million Euro, is set to distribute more than 20 firefighting aircraft across participating countries such as France, Croatia, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Alongside acquiring new aircraft, Spain plans to modernize its existing CL-215 and CL-415 fleet using a portion of the allocated funds. The delivery of the new DHC-515 fleet is scheduled to commence in 2027, marking a strategic step forward in Spain’s firefighting preparedness and collaboration within the RescEU network. 'A risk to [the Quad's] IPMDA is the seemingly limited progress of the project in the western Indian Ocean region, where it could make a real difference to maritime security. There has been limited official detail on the ambitious project to provide near real-time data in the maritime domain through what appears to be the resourcing of commercial arrangements through public-private partnerships. 'For the next phase of the project, Australia should support a roll out of IPMDA through the provision of radio frequency satellite data to the Regional Maritime Information Fusion Centre in Madagascar and the Regional Operations Coordination Centre in the Seychelles. This would significantly enhance the monitoring capacity in the western Indian Ocean region, which in turn enhances Australia’s maritime security as an Indian Ocean coastal state'. https://lnkd.in/eXhprkuQ

Since September 1st, 2024, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES assets have been engaged in protecting the tugs involved in the MV SOUNION salvage operation, aiming to facilitate the prevention of an unprecedented environmental disaster in the region. The private companies responsible for the salvage operation have concluded that the conditions were not met to conduct the towing operation and that it was not safe to proceed. Alternative solutions are now being explored by the private companies. EUNAVFOR ASPIDES remains concentrated on its original mandate, acting as a credible EU maritime security provider, aiming to contribute to the freedom of navigation of merchant vessels in its Area of Operation. #eunavforaspides #maritimesecurity #redsea #SOUNION
