Couple of developments over the past 3 weeks: Fired my first employee. Wow firing people is terrible. I have a strong conviction this was the right thing to do for the business, but on a human level it’s hard not to feel a huge amount of empathy for the individual. Hired 2 people. One will be a sharpener in the warehouse and the other will take over my route freeing up my time up to work on the business. Brought on a new supplier and received pricing for To-Go containers 🥡🥤. These items are used weekly by restaurants will compliment our current offering of nitrile gloves and trash can liners. One of my large box trucks broke down. The fix was relatively inexpensive, but it did prompt the thought to sell that vehicle and use a smaller more efficient van for that route. The price increase was accepted without complaint by almost every customer. Of my ~350 customers we had 3-4 complaints over the increase and 1 customer dropped us (they did not mention the increase as a reason but the timing would imply it was related). I think we are likely still too close to being a price leader which is not where I want to be.

Hire professional. Every market has secrets. To interact with your market, you should understand its secrets and orientation. I was involved in the Egyptian aftersales market for last 3 months and followed numerous Facebook and Instagram accounts. All of them concentrated on prices and discounts, giving me the impression that the market is solely price-oriented. As I dug deeper, I discovered Egyptian customers ready to pay well if you insure his money value. By the way, I'm talking about all vehicles types, from BYD (most interested car) to luxury vehicles. It is time to engage pros to operate your media rather than being an amateur. It is sometimes OK to do whatever comes to mind and reflect on your thoughts, but when solid results are required, hire specialists.

When you hire someone new it’s not their job alone to be successful. You are accountable as well as the owner of the business. While you may not have the bandwidth to be invested in their success you definitely can appoint someone to ensure that. Come to think of it, you just spent a lot of time, energy and resources in finding this new person and bringing them onboard. Don’t leave it to fate to decide their destiny. Do everything you can to ensure success.

Want the hack for finding good employees? Be a good leader. Have a clear and compelling mission statement and vision for your business that employees can buy into and be a part of. Have clearly defined position descriptions for each role. Have a defined onboarding process that brings new employees in comfortably, shows them the ropes and makes them feel like part of the team. Have regular 1-on-1 meetings with team members so they always know where they stand. (Bonus points if you help keep them accountable for personal and life goals too.) Make sure that team member's lives work inside and outside of the shop with personal and professional development opportunities. As soon as you find them you can get in your car and be on your way. You don't keep looking for them...right? Someone compared finding your car keys to finding talent.
