Last week we were tagged in a post about FINCANTIERI delivering the vessel PROGRESS to Crowley Shipping. These are the small things that make us happy. Seeing the tag about something so substantial such as vessel delivery really drives home the magnitude of these projects. The initial release about TGE Marine providing tanks was from June 2022…and everyone knows, these projects start so much earlier, prior before anything is published about these. PROGRESS is the largest Jones Act* compliant LNG bunker to have been built in the US and it sets new standards for the quality and capabilities as well as energy needs of the shipping industry according to Crowley Shipping’s senior vice president James C. Fowler. The vessel has two (2) 6000 m³ bilobe tanks made from 9% Nickel steel, which have high performance insulation to ensure a low boil off gas rate (BOR), and an LNG subcooler for BOG handling as well as a gas combustion unit for back up! They are the first Spanish merchant fleet shipowner to adopt wind propulsion on their fleet! 🏆 As part of Marflet’s ongoing decarbonisation strategy, the installation will enable Santiago I to dramatically reduce conventional fuel use and emissions. A Spanish shipbuilder will build the first electric Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (eCSOV) for UK-based Bibby Marine . GONDAN Shipbuilders - Astilleros Gondán has been contracted to build the eCSOV for Bibby Marine that has received UK government funding under the Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI) scheme. The vessel will contain 20MWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that can be charged offshore if the infrastructure is there, and likewise onshore. The onboard charging equipment will be capable of receiving high-voltage charging – 11kv – which Kathryn Doyle, at Bibby Marine, believes is a first. “This involves a significant amount of electrical equipment and design on the vessel and we believe we are the only ones who have done this date,” she said. ”We are also working closely with offshore charging suppliers to ensure the vessel interfaces are prepared for accommodating their equipment for physical connection to the offshore charging network.” The eCSOV will also have hybrid engines for back-up that run on methanol or marine gas oil (MGO), with the capability of operating on 100% diesel mode or dual-fuel mode, which is 90-99% methanol with pilot injection of diesel only, she said. ”Methanol is around 50% less energy dense than diesel but is approximately the same weight. Due to it being 50% less energy dense, it requires us to carry double the methanol to meet the same vessel range as diesel. We recognise at this time sourcing green methanol is not easy, however with rising demand we are expecting supplies to increase over the next five years, and therefore availability. ”We will continue to work alongside our partners to secure green methanol.” Read more on Maritime Journal; https://lnkd.in/dVzVEd89

This year, we are celebrating 10 years of partnership since we first started collaborating with Shell and we appreciate the progress we’ve made together.   Shell was a trailblazer and early adopter of our air lubrication technology back in 2014, when we first installed our system on a Shell vessel. In addition to Lloyd’s Register, HSVA, the University of Southampton and Carnival, Shell also independently verified the fuel and emissions savings the Silverstream® System generates.   In 2020, Shell installed the Silverstream® System on the Methane Patricia Camila LNG carrier, which marked the first time Silverstream had installed a system on this ship type. The system was retrofitted on the 170,000 cbm LNG carrier during its planned dry docking at the Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Shipyard in Singapore. Poland’s gas transmission system operator, GAZ-SYSTEM, the project developer and operator of the country’s future liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the port of Gdańsk, has signed a long-term time charter party (TCP) agreement for a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with a subsidiary of Japan’s shipping major Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Following GAZ-SYSTEM announcement that BW Group and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. were the two main contenders for the #FSRU last November, the latter emerged as the winner at the end of January. With an estimated #regasification capacity of 6.1 bcm of gaseous fuel per year, the #FSRU’s entire #regasification capacity has already been booked. The project entails the construction of a new floating #LNG receiving terminal approximately three kilometers off the coast of the Polish port of #Gdańsk. Once the construction at South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard is complete, which is expected in 2027, the #FSRU will be managed by the Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Aside from playing an important role in the terminal as a receiving and storage facility, the vessel will also help strengthen Poland’s #energy #security as the country’s first #FSRU. This project is also perceived to be of great interest to #Europe. In line with this, the EU has designated it in its #Energy #Infrastructure #Regulation as a “project of common interest”, or an infrastructure development project that contributes at a regional level. As a result, it received financial assistance from the European Commission for pre-investment works for the offshore part of the project. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. recently launched commercial operations for an #FSRU in West Java, Indonesia, part of a project described as Asia’s first gas-to-power project using #FSRU, electric generation, and gas-related facilities developed in an integrated manner. The firm also received another transition-linked loan last month as part of its #decarbonization efforts while a previous loan was used for the construction of an #LNG-powered #dualfuel #VLCC.

Safeen joins tanker pool. Safeen Feeders, part of the AD Ports group, has joined the Stena Sonangol Suezmax Pool, a joint venture between Stena Bulk, and the Angolan state-owned oil company, Sonangol. One of Safeen’s vessels, Safeen Elizabeth, a 2011-built 158,000 dwt Suezmax tanker, was recently deployed in the pool, which currently consists of about 20 Suezmax tankers.
