🌱 PRO-PLANTEURS Research in Action: Shaping the Future of Cocoa Cultivation in Côte d'Ivoire 🍫🌍 Throughout this summer, the #PROPLANTEURS Recherche team from Leibniz-Zentrum für Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF), in collaboration with the Ivorian NGO #SADRCI, facilitated participatory workshops in the communities of Zaranou and Amélikia in the Abengourou region, Côte d’Ivoire. These sessions brought together 26 dedicated #CocoaFarmers from partner cooperatives to assess the impact of sustainable #CocoaProduction practices on key functions of the local cocoa cultivation system. The workshops also focused on identifying potential future scenarios - both positive and negative - and discussing the conditions and strategies necessary for their realization. Identified negative scenarios often related to sharp production declines due to droughts, bush fires, and diseases, whereas the positive future scenarios often were linked with an enhanced farm #diversification backed by farmers' improved investment capacities and better market access for secondary crops.   These collaborative efforts are essential in shaping a #sustainableFuture for cocoa production in Côte d'Ivoire. PRO-PLANTEURS is looking forward to continue this journey of active participatory workshops and thanks partners and participants for their dedication and engagement. Boosting the Blue Economy: A Discussion on Aquafeed A big thank you to Gatsby Africa for organizing a productive meeting yesterday! I also had the pleasure of meeting with Ms. Betsy Njagi, the Principal Secretary of Blue Economy with Fellow Aqua Feed Millers. Our focus? Highlighting the positive impact of the aqua feed industry and collaborating to address its challenges. Impact We Create: --By providing high-quality commercial fish feed, we've witnessed a significant boost in farmer profitability, ranging from 5% to 26%. --Our industry is a major job creator, supporting local communities. We prioritize sourcing raw materials locally, strengthening the local economy. --We contribute to government revenue through taxes and economic activity generated. Challenges We Face: --High Energy Costs and requirement of Specialized Labor due to highly technical Extrusion Feed Plants that are significantly different from other Feeds Mills. --Removing Hurdles around animal sources of protein, which is an integral part of Fish Feed production, --Steps to take towards localization of raw materials --Removing roadblocks around GMO Soybean & Yellow Maize to be used for Fish Feed milling that can help in Food Security in Various Ways. This meeting fostered valuable dialogue between the industry and policymakers. Most of the challenges we discussed can't be resolved unless several relevant Government departments collaborate. Yesterday, July 23, 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration held The White House Super Pollutants Summit where it announced new USG actions to address climate super-pollutants, including 9 new private sector partners with USAID under the Feed the Future Food Loss and Waste (FLW) Accelerator, implemented by Feed the Future Market Systems and Partnerships https://lnkd.in/dzCewUTk We’re excited to work with these new partners in #Kenya, #Nepal, #Tanzania. Combined with the three existing MSP FLW partners, these nine new partners will upcycle or otherwise prevent over 85,000 metric tons of FLW while creating more than 600 new jobs through innovative food processing and storage and other circular economy approaches. 🐛 🐸 🐝 🐞👩🌾 #thaiRAIN is thrilled to have recently discussed future collaborations with the Thai Rice Foundation under Royal Patronage. We share common goals of encouraging climate-smart innovations among rice farmers, improving their livelihoods, expanding the Thai rice market, and lowering carbon emissions. We have picked a handful of #thaiRAIN’s featured SCi to collaborate with. Among them are RiceBot, a chatbot application on LINE that diagnoses rice diseases and recommends treatment within 5 seconds, and Soil Digest, a microbial product that provides farmers with a nature-friendly alternative to burning rice stubbles. This aligns with the foundation’s “New Generation Thai Farmers” initiative, encouraging the next generation to adopt rice farming and technology. #thaiRAIN looks forward to working with the Thai Rice Foundation under Royal Patronage to meet our goals in the months to come. The market is largely influenced by major buyers such as Clover, Danone, and Nestle. Recent trends in South Africa indicate that higher prices lead to reduced consumer demand. 🥑 Avocado, a fruit with substantial economic value, is emerging as a key export-oriented crop in South Africa. Projections indicate a significant growth in avocado production, with expectations to double cultivation to 15 704 hectares by 2030. This shift is attributed to a potential transition from sugar cane to avocado cultivation, presenting a spectrum of opportunities and challenges. Presently, a considerable portion, about 29%, of suitable avocado land is dedicated to sugar cane production. However, concerns loom regarding the intricate interlinkages among production, the agro-industry, and markets within the avocado value chain. To effectively address poverty alleviation and foster economic growth within the horticulture sector, establishing a well-defined value chain is imperative. Samba Cajú Farm, one of Mitrelli´s impactful projects, continues to make waves as a shining example of agricultural success! Recently, the Governor of Kwanza North Province inaugurated the harvest season, underscoring the exceptional productivity of the farm, solidifying its position as the most prolific in the province. Nevertheless, this is just one piece of a larger vision for sustainable agriculture and food security that extends beyond borders: from the Cuando Cubango Fish Farm in Angola, a government project set to produce over 500 tons of Tilapia annually, that significantly contributes to address nutrition requirements for the local communities, while generating employment opportunities, to the innovative Mango Project in Côte d'Ivoire. Designed to empower the mango industry through modern farming practices and advanced technologies, this project capacitates farmers to elevate mango production quality, consequently increasing exports.
