I am thrilled to join the judging panel for SailGP groundbreaking Impact League - sport's podium for the planet - to evaluate its ten national teams on specific sustainability and inclusivity initiatives throughout Season 4. Sustainability is embedded in the teams, delivering a baseline of ‘business as usual activity’ such as minimizing energy usage, sustainable travel, and more. This season, teams are rewarded significant points for delivering activity across the following key focus areas: The race to zero waste // creating a sustainable future Accelerating inclusion // advancing diversity and equity in sailing Climate action // innovating for a low carbon future Break boundaries // driving gender equity through the Women's Pathway I join to evaluate teams on the fourth key focus area 'breaking boundaries', alongside Jamie Chadwick, W Series Champion, Dame Heather Rabbatts, Women's Sports Group Founder and Kelly Simmons OBE Former Director of the Women’s Professional Game at The Football Association. How sustainable are the Paris Olympics 2024, for real? Honestly, after reading a couple of news and articles here and there, I think the organizers did a good job overall. - Developing a coaching tool to reduce CO2 emissions (climate coach) - Creating a funding program for climate projects - Utilizing existing buildings instead of constructing new ones - Using 100% green energy - Promoting plant-based food - Fostering inclusion and diversity through the games Of course, there is still much work to be done, especially regarding inclusion, diversity, gender equality, and addressing the CO2 emissions from attendees traveling to the games. Why is a worldwide event like the Olympics now focusing so much on carbon reduction, inclusion, diversity, and gender equality? I need to rethink my business branding on photos, and overall strategy. And I need your help to tell me how. A wonderful post below, signed off with an incorrectly credited photo, which has been purchased and is sold with the photography company logo across it - and nothing else. Yet the photo is what draws you into the story. Without it the text of the post doesn’t get read. People are happy to pay good money for a photo company branded photo to remember and share their memories and promote their dreams. And what is more - the company putting in the event prefers the economics of event memories (without event info) to be promoted and paid for that way. Which is at odds with how I would like an event I would organise to be remembered. When I see this happening I’m struggling to understand how to sell my business model of the event paying for free downloads for participants- branded with the event information for ongoing customer loyalty and ensuring memories. Without event branding and info and date that photo could be any trail run with a friend, not an iconic 100km race. Putting years, event, logo, sponsors on photos makes it the memory, it drives engagement and alignment and it drives positive memories and also the ideal to repeat an achievement. Customer loyalty in a single image. The unbranded photo can be rolled out every year and is timeless. Without the date - it’s always just last year. With a date - it drives a return to “get a full set”. I honestly wonder what I need to do to explain to the event directors that “dont get it” that branded free event photos are the most effective marketing strategy they can have… all advice welcomed !! After binge-watching the record-breaking performance of the NZ Olympic Team this year, I'm intrigued. Some curious data points to consider: 1. Female athletes won 67.5% of the medals, yet they made up just shy of 50% of the contingent – 98 female athletes to 99 male athletes. We also rank highly in the World Economic Forum's Gender Equality Index, getting 4th place this year. Coincidence or correlation? 2. On a medals per capita basis, we ranked 4th in the world after Grenada, Dominica and St Lucia, all under 200,000 in population. And we've consistently been in the Top 5 for the last 4 Summer Olympics. Why? (Shoutout to Craig Nevill-Manning for medalspercapita.com). 3. 50% of medals awarded were on the water – rowing, canoeing and sailing. Roughly 65% of NZ's population live within 5km of the coast, compared to 40% living within 100km globally. This likely results in a higher percentage of the young population having sustained participation in watersports. 4. 65% of medals awarded were won sitting down – in row boats, in canoes or on bike seats (this goes up to 75% if you want to count sailing). No idea what to make of this one!
