Securing employment can be a challenging journey. A "yes" from a prospective employer can often be elusive, leading to frustration and disheartenment as you wonder how to utilize the vast amount of time on your hands. This week, we are exploring the value of volunteering, especially when you are waiting for your first employment opportunity or are in between jobs. Don’t wait until your confident to show up. Show up until you’re confident. We made it back in time from San Diego for our Reno Rodeo volunteer obligations! The Spanish Springs Rodeo Team volunteered at Kids Day. Reno Rodeo raises over $2 Million a year to support 14 different counties in Nevada, including our rodeo team. On our way out, Ainsley and I snuck to the back alley way and captured a few photos. She was nervous about being caught 😂, but I wanted her to get the on the ground opportunity to visualize what running at the Reno Rodeo would look like some day. Opportunities to visualize what you want is so important. If you are leading a team, parenting, or working towards your own goals…creating opportunities to visualize what that achievement looks like is so important. At a time where connection feels more crucial than ever, I'm excited to share new work from the Ad Council's Belonging Begins With Us campaign in partnership with the American Immigration Council. Our 'shared table' PSA is designed to demonstrate how we can bridge across lines of difference to cultivate stronger, more connected communities Nearly three-quarters of Americans report feeling a lack of belonging in their local communities. This feeling of disconnection not only affects our personal well-being but also impacts workplace productivity and the strength of our democracy. It's clear that fostering a sense of belonging is not just important – it's essential. Our new creative partnership with the Team Up Project, led by founding partners Catholic Charities USA, Habitat for Humanity International, Interfaith America , and YMCA of the USA (National Resource Office), seeks to expand relationship-building activities and encourage connection in local communities through shared action. "Volunteer Carefully: A Rule of Work Before you eagerly raise your hand to volunteer, consider this: saying 'yes' to everything won't necessarily lead to recognition or advancement. It's essential to evaluate each opportunity thoughtfully. Ask yourself: Why am I being asked to volunteer? How does this align with my goals? How will this impact my image with senior management? Is this a task no one else wants, or is genuine help needed? Volunteering could showcase your abilities and willingness to tackle challenges, or it could backfire, making you seem like a mere gofer. Choose wisely; there's no benefit in being seen as a 'monkey.' Ensure your actions align with your goals and provide real support when needed. And beware: sometimes, you might find yourself volunteered without consent. Learn to read the situation and step back when necessary. Preparing for an exciting workshop had me thinking about my experience with 3 organizations which are powered by a strong sense of purpose, volunteerism, and advocacy. And at the heart of it, one thing stands out. How TRUST-worthy are we for members/customers/sponsors/donors to continue supporting us? And not just once, but to do it repeatedly. It's the questions that we ask that give birth to such exciting possibilities.
