June is National Indigenous History Month. This month we recognize and honour the history, heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Indigenous clean energy leadership is critical in driving climate innovation and expediting Canada’s transition to a net-zero future. A coalition of 17 countries – Commonwealth of Australia, Canada, Republic of Congo, Republic of Costa Rica, Republic of Fiji, Republic of Finland, Republic of France, Federal Republic of Germany, Republic of Ghana, Japan, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Korea, Kingdom of Norway, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Kingdom of Sweden, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America - have endorsed the following statement: Recognizing that wood from sustainably managed forests provides climate solutions within the construction sector, we commit to, by 2030, advancing policies and approaches that support low carbon construction and increase the use of wood from sustainably managed forests in the built environment. Such policies and approaches will result in reduced GHG emissions, and an increase in stored carbon. Convening Chair of the International Sustainable Forestry Coalition (ISFC), launched in September 2023, Dr. David Brand said, “The construction sector and the built environment accounts for more than a third of global emissions and it is critical that countries move quickly to lower carbon emissions and increase stored carbon by using far more timber in buildings. 🌿 GBCA Targets Aussie Timber Supply Chains in New Nature Roadmap! 🪵The Green Building Council of Australia is introducing a nature roadmap to change how the Australian construction sector engages with natural resources. A key part of the new Roadmap is centred around halting, reversing and restoring biodiversity to achieve nature-positivity in new and existing building assets by 2030. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Sustainable Timber Use: The Roadmap will prioritise the transition towards sustainable timber usage, urging the avoidance of timber sourced from native forests or areas hosting endangered species. This is a part of GBCA’s broader goal to achieve nature-positive outcomes in the construction sector by 2030. 2️⃣ Regulatory Alignment: As global awareness and regulatory measures around environmental impact intensify, the Roadmap seeks to align Australian timber supply chains with international standards, including the EU’s Regulation on Deforestation-Free Supply Chains. 3️⃣ Industry-Wide Impact: The initiative is set to influence a wide range of stakeholders, from architects to developers, pushing for a shift in how timber is sourced and used in building projects across Australia.
