As we commemorate International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we’re reminded of one of butet manurung’s stories when she attended the #CatalystChangemakersEcosystem Program Launch four months ago in which she shared a story about how helping a local community should be followed by the right way of thinking so we can provide the right solutions. The story starts with a hunter who lives in a forest and is accustomed to walking through the forest barefoot. The hunter’s feet had grown tough and resilient, even able to withstand thorns without injury. Then, someone gave the hunter a pair of shoes in the thought that it would help the hunter at first. Over time, the shoes wore out, and the hunter's feet, having lost their natural toughness, became vulnerable and injured. This example highlights how the hunter became dependent on the shoes, something he didn’t need before, creating new challenges and unnecessary expenses. The initial act of kindness ended up weakening the hunter’s natural abilities and making the hunter dependent on something that wasn’t necessary before. This story emphasizes the importance of empathy when offering help or solutions, particularly in empowering indigenous communities. Not all act of kindness, even if well-intentioned, is beneficial. All in all, it is important to remember that the best solutions come from understanding and respecting the unique needs of those we aim to help. At GIF, we uphold the importance of #localwisdom. In 2007, the United Nations (UN) adopted a Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples including their rights to self-determination and to protect their cultures, identities, languages, ceremonies, and access to employment, health, education and natural resources. Indigenous peoples continue to face threats to their sovereignty, economic well-being, languages, cultural heritage, and access to the resources on which their cultures depend. In the 21st century, Indigenous groups and advocates for Indigenous peoples have highlighted numerous apparent violations of the rights of Indigenous peoples. What does a life of service mean to you ?

As executive recruiters, we often focus intensely on candidates' skills, experience, and past achievements. Of course, these are crucial factors in assessing fit for a given role. However, Simon Sinek wisely reminds us that people ultimately make decisions based on why we do what we do. Our candidates don't simply want to know what they'll be doing day-to-day or even how much they'll earn. They want purpose. They want to feel like their work has meaning and makes an impact. As Sinek puts it, they want to buy into why we as recruiters and our client organizations do what we do. “People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it.” This quote challenges me to reflect on my own why as a recruiter. Fundamentally, I believe bringing the right people together to tackle meaningful challenges changes the world for the better. When I take the time to connect with candidates about shared goals and values versus simply discussing their resumes, magic happens. These interactions are infinitely more inspiring for all involved. My hope is that we as recruiters inspire both our candidates and our clients by always coming back to why. The work we do matters so much more when we connect on this deeper level. If we never lose sight of our fundamental why — our vision for a better future — I believe we'll also never lose sight of the passion and talent that fuels meaningful progress. My challenge to all my fellow recruiting colleagues is to lead with and listen with why.
