As a new grad RPN, Christie Watson's TED Talk, "What Nurses Can Teach Us," ignites a fire within me. Her words resonate deeply, reminding me of the profound impact compassion has in our noble profession, particularly during times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Watson's journey is a beacon of inspiration, showcasing the transformative power of nursing beyond the confines of clinical tasks. She eloquently underscores the significance of compassion in forging meaningful connections with patients at their most vulnerable moments, emphasizing how empathy can shape positive outcomes.
In a recent interview, I seized the opportunity to reflect on my approach to care. Without hesitation, I championed the importance of a compassionate ethos. This belief echoes Watson's conviction that compassion is the heartbeat of nursing, driving us to make a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.
Similarly, when asked about conquering work fatigue, I shared a personal strategy aligned with Watson's insights on combating compassion fatigue. Just as Watson exemplified resilience by returning to clinical work during the pandemic, I understand the importance of seeking support when needed. Whether raising our hands to aid others or seeking assistance for ourselves, it's imperative to prioritize self-care to maintain our well-being and deliver exceptional care.
In the face of adversity, both professionally and personally, we must rally our spirits and prioritize self-care. We refuse to be overwhelmed by the tragedies we witness; instead, we rise above, nurturing our own well-being to continue serving others with unwavering compassion and resilience.
In the immortal words of Rumi, "I know you are tired but come. This is the way." Let us heed Rumi's call, embracing the courage to seek help when needed, both for ourselves and for others. Together, we navigate the challenges of our profession, illuminating the path with our compassion and commitment to healing.
United in our resolve, we overcome compassion fatigue, ensuring that our light shines brightly in a world often shrouded in darkness.

As a former hospital chaplain, I encountered so many instances when cultural competence and cultural humility made a huge difference in how patients perceived the quality of the care being given, and the trust they had in providers.
My article for VITAL WorkLife delves into this topic.

#MakePositiveNoise honestly… this is a retention strategy that will work as long as you make is accessible to bedside staff. Grand rounds are usually hard to make, difficult to get people to come to and challenging to get staff to engage. Utilizing digital technology is an easy way to do this.
Step 1: Have the speaker send a teaser video (I usually do a long form, captioned video of me walking the dog or doing something random, saying hi! I am Mel… I do this. And I’m looking forward to seeing y’all soon! ) then they email that to the staff prior to my arrival with a registration link.
Step 2: the day of the grand rounds i am on tiktok. Twitter, insta. Engaging with folks. Then they film me. I let them! Why? Well I usually say something different each time, also, I love to have them send the recording out to staff who couldn’t make it.
Step 3: follow up survey. That survey can include questions about what would make people more engaged and allow for feedback in a narrative.
To learn how to use speakers to retain staff like this incredible organization is doing, send me a message. Happy to help you strategize!

The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) is championing nurse-led solutions to help Australian children maintain a healthy weight.
Interim ACN CEO, Emeritus Professor Leanne Boyd FACN, emphasises that nurses, who make up more than 50 per cent of the health workforce, play a crucial role in identifying at-risk children, educating families, and addressing weight-related challenges effectively.
Our new Position Statement, ‘Working with Children Above a Healthy Weight: Nurse-led interventions’, outlines key recommendations:
Ensuring every school-aged child has access to a qualified registered nurse.
Reforming healthcare funding to prioritise nurse-led care.
Promoting regular height and weight checks with early intervention.
Empowering nurses with training for effective, family-centred care.
