I remember the first time, years ago, that I heard “we need to empower and engage the frontline”. It struck me as odd. “But I know my colleagues”, I thought, “they ARE engaged outside of work, they are creative and joyful…outside of work, they are collaborative and passionate…outside of work.” ✨ Maybe it’s not an employee problem, maybe it’s a work environment one! ✨ ➡️ What if we didn’t have to “empower and engage the frontline” because we never stripped students of their power, curiosity, and autonomy in conventional school systems? Leaders would no longer need to “make it safe to ask questions” because we never learned that it was unsafe… Leaders would quit relying heavily on extrinsic motivation and carrot/stick approaches because we didn’t learn to chase a “gold star” over our own creative passions… Leaders would feel safe admitting they ‘don’t know’ because they never learned their worth was directly tied to school grades… What if? Yes, I work with CEOs to redefine business success by challenging their own preconceptions. But where do you think many of those preconceptions originated? *** Respect humanity (including children!). Improve work. Today is an exciting day. A little more than a year ago, the small classical school that I had the pleasure of serving announced it would cease operations. It was a tough call, but the right one. There was no one decision, event, or person that lead to its closure. Several decisions that didn't work out, some decisions that weren't made, and a tough market were all contributors. The months leading up to the decisions were quite positive and exciting, we felt momentum, but we also knew a significant change would have to be made. We believed that the school would need to adopt a cottage school (less than 5 days a week) option or shift to only offering that. There just wasn't enough gas in the tank to make the change, and tough decisions had to be made. In the middle we asked, what was the purpose of all the planning for a cottage school? The day the school announced it was closing a small group of parents and teachers began discussing how they could continue to do school together. Out of those conversations, The Oaks Classical Cottage School was born. It's the first cottage style school in our region. Tonight, our head of school will give a state of the school report that will share the details of how the year has gone so very well. Healthy financials, engaging faculty, a collaborative and fun board, and enrollment that is proof positive that there's a market for a school that teaches truth and values the family here in the river region. And me? Well, I get to be the lawyer in downtown USA, helping folks make decisions that impact the future of their loved ones, something I've always dreamed of doing. Going through a rough patch? John F. Kennedy, Jr. once said “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” So it is a tragedy (and a threat to the US's future development and growth) that our public schools fail so many children. That tragedy is compounded by the opposition from much of the educational establishment ... and a growing portion of our political elite (including our current President) ... to charter schools. A new study from Stanford University's Centre for Research on Education Outcomes of nearly 2 million charter school students and a similar control group of public school students demonstrates the positive impact charter schools can have on children, especially the most disadvantaged who are least well served by our public schools, and who stand to gain the most from a great education! The study found that in math, the average charter student advanced by an extra six days each year compared with one at a traditional public school, and by 16 days in reading. And students in cities, as well as Hispanic and African-American students, benefitted the most. The study also refuted the argument that over-performance by charter students was because those schools were creaming off the most motivated pupils or parents, finding that charter schools take in students who are doing worse than their classmates in public schools. It's time that charter school opponents put aside their ill-informed (or self-serving) opposition, follow the facts, and support charter schools and our kids! https://lnkd.in/gMAUJP2Q
