Join us on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, to celebrate Judge Xavier Rodriguez, a former Texas Supreme Court Justice, current U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Texas and proud Burbank alumnus at the 13th Annual Inspire Awards. Judge Rodriguez grew up just three miles from his downtown San Antonio office in the Collins Garden neighborhood. At Burbank High School, he was deeply involved in activities like the Bulldog Band and Chess Club, served as senior class vice-president, and graduated as Salutatorian. Although he received 12 scholarships, he was set on Harvard, where he studied history before earning his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law in 1983. Before joining the bench, he was a partner at Fulbright & Jaworski (now Norton Rose Fulbright) and taught at St. Mary's University School of Law. Judge Rodriguez is a strong advocate for San Antonio ISD students pursuing Ivy League education, encouraging them to "apply everywhere" and not let financial concerns hold them back. Join us at the Witte Museum on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, to celebrate the Honorable Xavier Rodriguez. "Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog!" Purchase Tickets: https://lnkd.in/gSmTip5J

Don't tell me this is not targeting. This is a maneuver to respond to the protest and demands for equality after 2020. This is the rise of hateful politicians in power to abuse and misuse their roles. This party is the same party associated with the seize on our capitol. THEY, all of them, should be stripped of their power. Banned from office. This is not America, but the beginnings of a dictatorship behavior. America is governed by the people for the people NOT certain people. It's unconstitutional. THIS. IS. CORRUPTION. A grave example of why we should have a separation between politics and education. Education welcomes ALL, not manipulates all for political advantage. Btw, research the 10th Amendment, which basically said if the law hasn't been defined by federal or state, then THE PEOPLE have the power.

"As with Black students, outcomes for Latinx, Native American, and Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian students have remained lower than state averages. Because LCFF does not allow for student racial groups to generate funding or to require districts to plan targeted investments for these students, leaders have not explicitly leveraged the funding law to address these racial equity gaps." Cultural Economist helping leaders build a common ground of understanding and collaboration on race and economic equity
White supremacists have always held positions of power, wealth and influence in America from its founding to the present day. Pretending otherwise is detrimental to the progress of Black Americans and other nonwhite populations. The reason why HBCUs were necessary in the first place is due to the ideology of racial hierarchy (valuing and devaluing humans by the mythological construct of race) and white supremacy that permeated every sector of society and was ingrained in the educational framework and systems across the nation. From the establishment of Harvard university to the establishment of public schools, white supremacy is the fulcrum upon which funding, curriculum, teacher salaries, quality of education for students, et al are all balanced. The defense of white supremacy is at work in creating laws, systems, public policies and private sector practices across America. White supremacists have been emboldened over the past decade to be more direct, hostile and in our faces. And they have champions in positions of power, wealth and influence across the country. How will those of us struggling to build a more equitable and Inclusive America respond?

Posted @withregram • @yourrightscamp Land-grant, historically Black colleges and universities have been deprived of over $13 billion in funds over the last thirty years, as per recent communications from the Biden administration to 16 state governors, urging increased investment in these institutions. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack addressed letters to the governors of 16 states, highlighting the shortfall in funding based on data from the National Center for Education Statistics. The inadequacy in financial support, as emphasized by Cardona and Vilsack, could have significantly benefited infrastructure, student services, and enhanced the universities' competitiveness in research grant acquisition. Underfunding hinders these HBCUs from adequately serving students, their respective states, and the nation as a whole. The referenced educational institutions were established under the Morrill Acts, which allocated land for the creation of public colleges and universities. Subsequent discrimination against Black students led to the 1890 Morrill Act, mandating equal consideration for Black students or the establishment of separate land-grant schools. These included prominent institutions like Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, Southern University and A&M College and North Carolina A&T State University, among others. Disparities in funding between majority-Black and majority-white land-grant institutions in states like #Florida, #Louisiana, #Tennessee, #Texas, and #NorthCarolina ranged from $1 to $2 billion. Cardona and Vilsack acknowledged the longstanding nature of this problem and expressed a desire to collaborate with states to address this issue, aiming to prevent the need for costly litigation. Inequities in funding and resources within the education system are part of a broader issue of systemic inequities within the United States. These disparities in education funding are often a reflection of deeper historical and structural inequalities that exist in American society. MLK said that the poor whites who tell black people to pull us up by boot straps, enacted colleges ro educate them only. Until 1994, when grants where extended to most federally funded schools. The pell grant would not be relevant today if it wasn't for the Morrill Act of 1862. A land-grant university (also called land-grant college or land-grant institution) is an institution of higher education in the United States designated by a state to receive the benefits of the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890.Signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1862, the first Morrill Act began to fund educational institutions by granting federally controlled land to the states for them to sell, to raise funds, to establish and endow "land-grant" colleges. The mission of these institutions as set forth in the 1862 act is to focus on the teaching of practical agriculture, science, military science, and engineering—although "without excluding other scientific and classical studies"—as a response to the industrial revolution and changing social class. This mission was in contrast to the historic practice of higher education concentrating on a liberal arts curriculum. A 1994 expansion gave land-grant status to several tribal colleges and universities.

The op-ed "A 'Black-Serving Institution' designation is a great start, but more is needed" is centered around a new California bill that would designate higher education universities that 'excel at providing academic resources to Black and African American students.' Before passing the bill, it is important to take into account the 1) state funding, 2) means to measure progress, and 3) incorporation of evidence-based practices. People often ask me, what do you like the most about your job? 🧐 Publishing with students is by far one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. I love to see the growth that happens through this process, and the pride they take in producing high quality scholarship. I’m proud to have coauthored this new article in the Journal of Postsecondary Student Sucess with Allyson Clarke and Charles Anderson III. We first thought of this piece in my Finance in Higher Education class 💰 If you’re interested in understanding how performance-based funding impacts public HBCUs, check it out and comment below 👇🏾 https://lnkd.in/eWYMQFX8
We are pleased to share the recent publication co-authored by HELPS Assitant Professor Dr. Jorge Burmicky, and HELPS doctoral students, Allyson T. Clarke and Charles Anderson III in the Journal of Postsecondary Student Success. The publication is titled “Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Performance-Based Funding: A Systematic Review of the Literature.” This systematic review of the literature explores the intended and unintended consequences of performance-based funding on public four-year HBCUs. This work is the product of a final assignment from the ELPS 610 Finance in Higher Education. Read here: https://lnkd.in/e9gBrawe

On this day in 1954, the US Supreme Court ruled the state-sanctioned segregation of public schools unconstitutional in the case Brown v. Board of Education, marking a crucial step towards educational equity. Brown v. Board of Education reshaped American education, but the fight for equity in public education is ongoing. The continuous efforts from parents, students, educators, and allies were essential in ensuring desegregation orders were implemented post-ruling. Achieving our mission for an equitable public education will require that same unwavering commitment. What was your experience learning about #BrownvBoard and how do you envision the future of public education? Join the conversation here: https://bit.ly/4bloaxu

States like Texas and North Carolina are dismantling DEI programs, impacting college admissions and funding for Black high school graduates. This shift in policy could limit opportunities for under-represented students, potentially affecting their college choices and financial aid. The University of Texas at Austin and Duke University have already seen changes, with Texas eliminating DEI offices and Duke replacing a full-ride scholarship for students of African descent. This raises concerns about the future of diversity and inclusion in higher education. Read the story: https://bit.ly/44R3drS
