An Unanticipated Retirement Wave Is Happening Right Now in the U.S. Millions more employees than expected are leaving the workplace in favor of retirement—a phenomenon that stands to have an outsized impact on employers. The U.S. currently has roughly 2.7 million more retirees than predicted, Bloomberg reports, according to a model designed by an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. That’s up 80 percent from six months ago, when there were roughly 1.5 million more retirees than anticipated. By contrast, prior to the pandemic, there often were fewer retirees than expected. https://buff.ly/3IdF589 #Retirement #SHRM #HR

Interesting article considering the volatile job market and the significant number of older employees severanced or laid off over the past three years that have had to turn to their 401k’s for funds to pay for short-term expenses to make ends meet, crippling their actual retirement goals.

Companies make sure your are being proactive and planning for people to retire. This isn't surprising to most HR professionals. I remember working for a company (a while back) that anticipated a huge wave of retirement with a 5-10 year period of time. They talked a good game about preparing but they really didn't and were surprised when people started walking out the door with critical valuable information. #hrstrategy #knowledgetransfer #dontbesurprised #workforceplanning
This article came across my SHRM feed and all I can say is I'm not surprised. The article goes into a lot of reasons why people are retiring, like it is a bad thing. Like it isn't something people haven't worked all their lives to be able to do. I am jealous, I wish I could retire. I am sure this is causing a lot of anxiousness in some C-suites that thought they could continue to work their most experienced people until the end of time. Retiring early or not isn't a surprise but companies just haven't planned for it. I think the last few years have shown us life is short. We should enjoy the time we have, and no arbitrary number should tell us when enough is enough, when to retire. Good for you retirees! #retirement #freedom #noworking #enjoylife #sojealous
