While most industry attention seems to be on green and blue hydrogen, neither of the two is the cheapest clean hydrogen pathway in Europe today. According to the trade association #HydrogenEurope, that title goes to turquoise hydrogen. Turquoise hydrogen is produced through methane splitting, or what is commonly referred to as methane pyrolysis. The process involves the thermal decomposition of methane at temperatures above 1000°C in the absence of oxygen in a reactor. At the end of the process, methane is split into hydrogen and solid carbon – or “carbon black.” Provided it is powered by renewable energy, it is deemed to be a zero-emission solution. Demystifying the Cost of Clean Energy: The LCOH of Hydrogen in the Spotlight! Hydrogen is buzzing as the fuel of the future, but understanding its cost is crucial. Enter Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), a key metric for navigating the clean energy landscape. What is LCOH? Think of it as a price tag for hydrogen, accounting for its entire journey - from production to delivery. Similar to LCOE for electricity, LCOH helps us compare different production methods and understand the overall cost picture. What affects LCOH? Production Technology: Electrolysis using renewable energy is eco-friendly but might have higher upfront costs compared to other methods. Energy Source: Green hydrogen (powered by renewables) generally boasts a lower LCOH than "gray" hydrogen (produced from fossil fuels). Economies of Scale: Bigger production facilities can benefit from lower costs per unit of hydrogen produced. Infrastructure: Distribution and storage networks impact LCOH, highlighting the need for efficient infrastructure development. Why is LCOH important? Cost Comparison: LCOH helps compare hydrogen to other energy sources, assessing its competitiveness in the market. Investment Decisions: Knowing LCOH empowers policymakers, investors, and industry leaders to make informed choices about resource allocation and incentives for sustainable hydrogen production. Emissions Reduction: Lower LCOH for green hydrogen accelerates the shift to cleaner energy sources, contributing to reduced emissions. Energy Transition: Understanding LCOH is crucial for integrating hydrogen seamlessly into the future energy mix. The LCOH of hydrogen is poised to decrease as technology advances, economies of scale take effect, and supportive policies are implemented.
