I don’t know who else… But I as a social media manager did not have these skill sets. You may have completed a course or you may have accidentally become a social media manager. Like I did. 🤷♂️ I completed my graduation and applied at a marketing firm for an internship. Without knowing what I am getting into. The internship went for just a week and I learned Canva during that period. My first task was to add names in invitation cards. Long story short: I happened to work there for a year. And back then I missed a lot of opportunities because I did not have enough skills. Now it makes sense because you cannot learn a bunch of skills altogether when you’re working at a 9-5 job. But you know what I regret? Not taking the time to learn just one skill. Now that I have learned a few skills. It makes me realize that you just need a few days to learn the basics of Facebook ads. It will hardly take you a week to learn the basics of Google ads. 🚀 Everyone strives to become a master. I too made the mistake that when I’ll have time I will learn these skills. And I never had my ideal time. In the process of work and aspiring to be an influential creator the time I wasted I will never get it back. Shoot a shopping haul, unboxing video, recipe, work-out, aesthetic lifestyle video, post it to your personal IG or TikTok or create a new account. Get creating and show us that you have both the initiative, and platform understanding that it takes to work with brands. 2. Put together a digital portfolio and well designed resume. Canva is an incredible resource that allows you to create professional, well designed documents with ease, so please - no more word docs please! 3. No typos in your application! We’ll spot them a mile away, and when it comes to social media management, attention to detail in KEY. 4. Think outside the box. At Melbourne Social Co, we get 10-20 job applications a day, even when we’re not hiring. (And when we are, it’s in the 100s.) Maybe I'm an idiot... maybe I'm not... But back in 2018, I got my first marketing job. The promotion basically went like this: "Hey Zac, you're a millennial, you've got a Facebook profile, and you're studying marketing in school... want to be our marketing manager?" I said yes 😁 And it was a MESS... I had no clue what I was doing. So, I did what any rational, success-minded individual would do: I went part-time with my job and got an internship at DigitalMarketer! It was a blast. Three months of learning what marketing actually is. It was there that I got introduced to Ben Griffin, the first person I'd ever met who got paid to work the keys of a computer like Beethoven worked the keys of a piano. Ben's a copywriter, and I just really, REALLY wanted to learn his skill. But I've always been a voice-first kind of communicator, so learning to write was and is an unnatural thing for me. And it's unlikely that I'll ever play on the same field as him or Cole Schafer or Nathan Baugh or 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner... That said, while struggling to study copywriting, Ben gave me a huge boost of confidence one day when I ironically recommended the losing subject line in a split test at DigitalMarketer... My subject line was too long and clunky, but when I suggested it, Ben gave me this look of being impressed, like I was "on the right track." And he doesn't know it, but that look in his eye gave me the nudge I needed to keep trying at copywriting. The summer came to a close, the internship ended, and I went back to my job full-time. Can you guess the first thing I did? I immediately dusted off our ancient, non-responsive email list, and I started sending them messages. I didn't even have compelling offers to send them, I just sent them an email each Friday with the subject "Some inspiration to end your work week..." And I'm not kidding you, the lift in response, leads, and sales was INSTANT. I was blown away! I even saved the first replies I got to those emails to remind me of that time: “very inspiring” "what a great message” "I really appreciate your emails… I really do look forward to what new and impactful information will be in the next” “Love your messages man. One of the few…emails I don’t automatically delete each week.” "Needed this message today, been a rough week" "Many thanks for the inspiration and motivation to become the phenomenal company we aspire to" I soon turned around my rocky start with that job, built all of the company's marketing systems around our email list, and later became CEO. So if you're at all concerned that you might be a marketing idiot like me, I highly recommend starting with some simple, inspiring emails to your list. Build that relationship, and let goodwill do the heavy lifting for you. It's a great place to start. And if you're an experienced marketer wanting to make a difference? For the past 5 weeks I’ve been doing work experience as a Social Media Marketing Intern at Mantra Media Ltd, building my skills to make me more employable for future roles and exploring my creative side. I’ve learned so much in my time at Mantra Media and it’s given me a lot more confidence for a job in the industry! Thanks to all of the team at Mantra Media for making this happen! 🙏 I’ve been working on various projects, such as content creating, copywriting, video creating, creating graphics on canva, email marketing, analysing data, looking over reports and loads more! A lot of this required me to use software and websites that I’ve never used before, so each day I have been learning something new and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Since I last did any work in marketing, the industry has developed so much, there’s a LOT more buttons to press, tools to use, brains to keep engaged, and let’s not forget ✨artificial intelligence✨.
