🏝 The ocean holds immense promise for driving sustainable development in #SmallIslands. Yet, the financial backing they receive is not enough. On average, in 2021-22, small island developing states (SIDS) received $7.38 billion in official development assistance. However, only 6% of this was directed toward the ocean economy ($436.6 million). 🌊 Encouragingly, 91% of these funds were used to promote ocean health and sustainable ocean-based activities. The largest share of ocean economy ODA to SIDS went to maritime transport (45%), followed by fisheries (17%). This points to the concentration of ocean-related development assistance in just a few sectors. This status quo underscores a real opportunity to mobilise effective and coherent support for the sustainable ocean economy in SIDS. #SIDS4

Congratulations to Coral Pasisi and Tofia Niue for winning Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Award. Tofia Niue developed a unique ocean conservation mechanism, the Ocean Conservation Commitment. This is a new financing mechanism whereby anyone can sponsor the protection of 1 square kilometer of Niue’s ocean for the next 20 years. This first-of-its-kind financing mechanism ensures an equitable and scalable approach to protecting and managing 100% of a nation’s ocean territory, including a large scale no-take Marine Protected Area (Niue Moana Mahu) constituting 40% of Niue's EEZ - 127,000 km². Each sponsorship is US$148 (NZD $250), with 127,000 OCCs available and is stewarded by a local public-private trust called Niue Ocean Wide.
