News from the Tasmania e-bike subsidy from the Micromobility Report As at 29th January 2024, $86,856 had been issued in grants for e-bikes for 194 Tasmanians. The fund is also open to people buying e-scooters or other micromobility options, but these have been less popular than bikes and have only received 34 successful applications. More rebates have gone to southern riders (105 applicants), followed by the north-west at 81 people and the north with 42. https://lnkd.in/grEZCn94

This issue is severely damaging electric bike sales in the UK. My first meeting of today was with one of the UK's largest financial institutions who have been told by their insurer they cannot charge or store e-bikes at any of their offices ergo their staff can no longer use e-bikes as a commuting option. This literally translates to hundreds of lost sales for the British cycling industry. This is by no means an isolated incident and we hear it happening at an increasing number of businesses and public institutions. Bigger motors and thumb throttles will not get more people cycling in my opinion. Reducing the number of unsafe batteries/chargers in the UK will build confidence and will increase the number of people cycling https://lnkd.in/e3geumaE #ebikes #commuting #batteryfires #activetravel #cycling

Progress...? After years of campaigning on this topic, it's great to have the team at Brompton Bicycle acknowledge the importance and effect that fires related to poor quality lithium ion batteries are having on our industry. Blanket bans on electric bike storage have been being imposed by estate managers and employers in London since at least the summer of 2022, reacting to actions of the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) and the Association of British Insurers. Clearly it is far simpler to place a blanket ban on electric bikes period, rather than distinguishing between the "good" and the "bad". Since 2022 I have had a Google Alert set up for "electric bike" and "fire" and the volume and frequency of notifications the world over is scary. The devastating effects of dangerous lithium ion batteries are undeniable and more absolutely needs to be done to both block their supply and usage. The question is how... Cycle Lanes and Bike Bunkers: We could do with a Waterford billboard campaign marketing cycle education for both cyclists and car drivers. For example I have never seen a cyclist indicate what direction they intend to turn (or an Lx Scooterist for that matter). I have nearly been run over on numerous occasions at the junction, between the Glen and Morgan Street, by impatient drivers. Annoyingly for all it is far safer to bypass the junction and ride on the path (but stopping for pedestrians who have the right of way). These kind of junctions are the most dangerous and it would be great if a "cycle friendly" solution could be applied. I see there is a tender out for the design, build and maintenance of "Bike Bunkers" in Dublin. It would be great to do a pilot programme here in Waterford for the same. https://lnkd.in/e4xMzF4X

If you follow our feed, you probably saw the news that the City of Atlanta was considering joining other global #cities in encouraging the purchase of #ebikes. That consideration is over and they are moving forward with a rebate program. Here are some details, courtesy of the Atlanta Regional Commission: “The program is expected to launch in Spring 2024. Income qualified residents are eligible to receive a $1,500 rebate for a standard e-bike and $2,000 for a cargo e-bike. Rebates for other residents are $500 for a standard e-bike and $1,000 for a cargo e-bike. Rebates are limited to one per resident and bikes must be purchased at a participating local bike shop. About 800 to 1,000 e-bikes are expected to be purchased through the rebate program.” (khp) https://lnkd.in/duvKDeEB

We should follow this model to raise public awareness of how e-bikes can be a net benefit for New Yorkers, when bought from reputable local bike shops. If we are going to achieve our GHG reduction goals & expand access to affordable transportation options, we need more positive promotion of e-bikes. Such a campaign would raise public awareness of e-bike safety, and complement New York State's new e-bike safety legislation. It is interesting to see this program coming out of the UK, which like NYC, has also been struggling with the negative perception of e-bikes due to battery fires caused by low-quality e-bike batteries in the marketplace. https://lnkd.in/g2Z_TCXR

I was walking on the streets when I saw this sign in front of a bike shop. My first thought was, "Wow, $75 for per day of biking around is too expensive''. I bike around London, and it is definitely a great place for biking because the streets are flat, and it has safe bike trails along the Thames River with great views that connect to parks. Still, it is not a touristic city like Niagara or Toronto to justify this price. What the bike shop is doing may be working and aligned with their strategy. However, I'd have a different approach if they want to attract new customers and increase sales. Here is what I'd do if I were the owner of this bike shop: First, people who rent these bikes probably don't own any, so they are hot leads for bike shops. Secondly, I would lower the price to $20 to make it more affordable and provide the customer with a pleasant experience when riding a bike from my shop. In that case, I will increase the chance of converting that customer. Lastly, I would emphasize the importance of customer communication. By asking permission from the customer and keeping in touch through email marketing, text message marketing, or even a phone call, I can keep the customer engaged and informed about bike sales, promotions, new bikes coming, bike features, and events. This will place the company in the consumer's decision-making process when the customer decides to buy a bike. I had a similar experience before I owned my car. I rented a brand-new Hyundai Sonata and took it on a long trip. The experience was amazing, and I tested the car's smooth drive, tech features, gas consumption, and appearance. When I was ready to buy a car, Hyundai was definitely in my decision-making process. It took me about one year, but that's just to say how long a good experience can last.
