Dutch design firm MVRDV has developed a strategic framework on behalf of and in collaboration with the Municipality of Groningen, which is said to provide a foundation from which the city centre can grow, adapt in the face of climate change, and provide space for a diversity of residents, economic activities, and expansion of key institutions. https://lnkd.in/eB6Mjn4A

The retrofit of heritage and historic buildings involves preserving history and embracing sustainability. A large number of buildings in the UK are heritage structures and are often less energy-efficient due to their older construction. The goal is to maintain these buildings' cultural identity and transition them to be more sustainable and energy-efficient. Have you come across any heritage buildings that have undergone successful retrofits? We'd like to hear examples that effectively balance historic preservation with modern energy efficiency. #VORGroup #HeritageRetrofit #HistoricRetrofit #SustainableBuildings https://lnkd.in/epg38kC6 #VORGroup #HeritageRetrofit #HistoricRetrofit #SustainableBuildings

[TO KNOW] The 2024 European Elections mark a golden opportunity for politicians to embrace the potential of the buildings sector to address many of the issues affecting EU citizens while putting Europe firmly on track to achieve its climate goals. 🇪🇺 As a member of the World GBC’s European Regional Network (ERN), the Alliance HQE-GBC France is proud to support, alongside with 24 Green Building Councils and seven regional partners, the European Manifesto for a Sustainable Built Environment which sets out our vision of how sustainable buildings can be at the heart of a prosperous and equitable future for Europe. 🛠️✅ In Europe, France has been a forerunner in implementing policy to regulate whole life carbon of buildings. Indeed, since 2022, our country has one of the most advanced regulations regarding energy and carbon as all new buildings must be low energy consumption and low carbon. Greenhouse gas emissions are calcultated throughout the life cylce of buildings, in accordance with international standards such as ISO, European CEN, the European reference framework LEVEL(S), European taxinomy, and others. 🇫🇷 If it is actually possible in France, but also in other countries such as Denmark or Japan which have similar requirements, it is indeed possible at a larger European scale. That is why we call on European policymakers to take on board the recommendations of the European Manifesto for a Sustainable Built Environment and establish clear and long-lasting policies that support transformative action so that we can work together and realise our sector’s full potential. SPACE JUSTICE - If some need more, who should have less? It has long been clear that to reduce the negative impact of the built environment, buildings need to live longer, existing structures need to be repurposed, and built areas need to be used more efficiently. However, is it also time to discuss how much we need and how to share it fairly and justly? Should square meters per person be limited? Should we stop new construction in the Western world? Do not miss Nicolai Bo Andersen's insightful recent article on Climate Justice in the Built Environment through the lens of the SER framework: Sufficiency, Efficiency, and Renewables. Unfortunately, it is currently available only in Danish.

[Intervention] Buildings are currently undergoing a significant need for change: energy sobriety, ESG, taxonomy, SFDR requirements require important modifications and Covid has led to a higher demand for flexibility in the buildings’ use. France is ahead with its ‘green’ regulations: a perfectly new bioclimatic urban planning plan is coming up soon for Paris. France is also thinking about a more flexible building use, and Paris aims at increasing social housing. Join Silke Nadolni, Partner specialised in the #property investment field at LPA-CGR avocats, for a panel discussion at the next European Talk in Paris organised by Drees & Sommer. What are the barriers and facilitators urban designers face when taking action on climate change? Urban designers have considerable potential to take important climate change actions in the built environment. Based on interviews with urban designers across Australia, we found that the main actions taken were: development and use of policies and strategies; education and research; appropriate project designs; reduction of carbon footprints; advocacy and lobbying; the use of sustainability measures and ratings; and taking on projects oriented to climate change action. Key facilitators of these actions that overcame barriers were strong leadership, establishment of targets and measures, effective regulation, financial and other incentives, and access to trustworthy, practical information.
