WHAT IS YOUR SIDE HUSTLE? At age 71 my side hustle was doing FREE gardening seminars to help people become more food self sufficient. I contacted clubs, churches, and various other groups and told them I would be happy to schedule presentations regarding HYDROPONICS, No Pesticide gardening and my specialty VERTICAL GARDENS. I had NO intention of earning 1¢. I just wanted to share my 40+ years of experience. BUT it has turned into a business, a youtube channel and a website. After the seminars people would ask WHERE to buy the products I talked about in the seminar. So I created a website and added Affiliate links to those products and also purchased an inventory of products. Seminars attendees also asked If I could do hydroponic installations at their Home and business. This extra income is applied to my CHARITY donations, hiring more farm workers and distribution of food, seeds and gifting of our various products. This all happened because I simply wanted to share my life experience. Making money was the farthest thing from my plan! I achieved these things because of my passion and was NOT just about making $$. Do what you ❤ that is the secret.

One of the biggest barriers to changing behaviour of large swathes of the population is ensuring people feel good about the actions they take. Emotions are a key driver in behaviour change. My council have spent a lot of money on a “rewilding” project. As part of that they’ve been giving away free wild flower packets to residents. Which you may notice from my photo mainly consists of grass and a handful of daisies. Now I feel a number of things when I look at these pots. But mainly irritation that I tried hard (I’m a terrible gardener) to grow some grass. It’s also not having the impact I want it to. Because seriously, what is a handful of daisies going to do? I’m also annoyed that my council wasted money on some grass and daisies. Ironically, when it was a Tory council they actually did more for rewilding by building flower beds on large paved areas and filling them with a variety of different flowers that bloom at different times. They even added a herb garden by the butchers. Which is pure genius I have to say. One of my favourite sayings come from the DEI space; “impact over intent”. Imagine if these seedlings had created something beautiful? Had instilled confidence in someone’s gardening ability? Made them feel good? Works the same in all areas of life when we want someone to do something. It’s why charity shops are so popular. People feel like they’ve got a bargain, and they’re doing something good with their money / old things. It’s that feel good factor. #ConsumerBehaviour #ClimateChange #BehaviourChange
