Summer may be about getaways for many but, for some, that excitement is replaced with concern. Without access to school meal programs, parents worry how their children will be fed. New research from The Salvation Army Canada finds that many Canadians continue to struggle to meet their basic needs. Food affordability, inflation and housing security challenges persist as top issues.

One in four Canadians is struggling to afford basic needs. A report released by The Salvation Army on Monday outlined how a quarter of Canadians and 40% of single-parent households fear they do not have enough income to cover their basic needs. While the report says Canadians remain hopeful that financial pressures will ease in the new year, one fifth of the over 1,500 survey respondents said they’ve had to reduce their food intake in order to afford groceries.

D- for Ontario --- Food Banks Canada's 2024 #PovertyReportCards tell a sobering, accurate and insightful story. Everyday at Port Cares we see the impact of lagging and ineffective public policy around poverty and the primary conditions contributing to increasing levels of poverty and the increasing barriers for families and individuals trying to move forward. Port Cares isn't just a food bank because food banks alone cannot change the conditions of poverty. And food banks alone should not be shouldering the load of historic and increasing poverty in Canada. At Port Cares we provide the community with affordable housing, child development, parenting support, employment search and workforce training skills, community safety services as well as a spectrum of necessary family supports. It's time that all levels of government prioritize poverty and food insecurity - the situation is truly urgent.
The grades are in! Our 2024 #PovertyReportCards show that very little has changed since we first launched this initiative last fall, and that, in many ways, poverty and food insecurity are actually worsening across the country. With all but 3 provinces on the edge of failing and Canada’s overall score being downgraded to D-, it is very clear that governments at all levels simply aren’t taking enough action to address the unprecedented level of financial struggle faced by people across Canada. As nearly half of all Canadians feel financially worse off compared to 2023, we have seen a 30% increase in food bank demand in the last year alone, and 1 in 4 people in Canada experiencing food insecurity. The situation is urgent, and we simply cannot continue to accept it as the status quo. To see how your province is stacked up and how we think your government can ensure a Canada where no one goes hungry, please visit: https://lnkd.in/g5Cn_T7t

At Greener Village, we are deeply concerned by the findings in Food Banks Canada's 2024 #PovertyReportCards. The worsening poverty and food insecurity highlighted in this report are a stark reminder that immediate and concerted action is needed at all levels of government. With nearly half of Canadians feeling financially worse off compared to last year, and a staggering 30% increase in food bank demand, the situation is indeed urgent. In New Brunswick, the food insecurity rate has risen to 25.6%, affecting 1 in 4 people. We cannot accept this as the status quo. It’s time for comprehensive policy changes and increased support for those struggling to make ends meet. Greener Village remains committed to advocating for our community and providing essential resources to those in need, as we embark on building Atlantic Canada's first perishable food rescue centre. Together, we must push for a future where no one has to worry about their next meal. Join the THRIVE Campaign and create a greener, more food secure future with us: https://lnkd.in/gwJXNfe3 #FoodInsecurity #EndPoverty #CommunitySupport #TakeAction #TransformNB

New report by Foodbanks Canada showing 25% of Canadians and 42% of renters are now living in poverty. Disgraceful. To me the cause is obvious: a succession of irresponsible governments at all levels pandering with short-term thinking policies to essentially buy votes. Regulatory Rampage. Taxation Turmoil. Economic Vandalism. Productivity Ignorance. In the end, poorly constructed pandering policies drive up costs for the very people they are "pretending" to protect. https://lnkd.in/gm6hd4qA

Canada’s Shadow Minister for Finance | Member of Parliament for Calgary Forest Lawn | Conservative | Proud father of 2
After 9 years of failed Liberal-NDP economic policies, Canadians cannot afford to feed, heat or house themselves. 1 in 4 Canadians lives in food insecurity while 1 in 10 live in poverty. Trudeau is not worth the hunger or cost. The CEO of Food Banks Canada says "we need to make sure people who are not able to afford their lives today have some relief." Common Sense Conservatives will provide relief for all Canadians by Axing the Tax, Building the Homes, Fixing the Budget, and Stopping the Crime. https://lnkd.in/gmuX26-F
