During my first-year, as a Destination College Advising Corps (DCAC) College Adviser, I was responsible for leading the Latino Male Initiative (LMI) Program, which aims to increase post-secondary preparation for Latino males at San José High School.
Many of my students are Latinx/e, first-generation, low-income, and under-resourced. But despite our efforts, our young Latinox/e male scholars continue to be the most underrepresented.
The LMI Program discontinued in the 2022-2023 academic school year, which further impacted the goal of inspiring Latinx/e male scholars into pursuing a post-secondary education.
But this academic school year, I have launched the DCAC Student Leadership, with 6 Latinx/e male nominated scholars to represent their communities, to develop their leadership qualities, and to be role-models to their peers.
These nominated leaders are academically motivated and want to make a positive change. They demonstrate the persistence to grow, develop, and succeed.
These leaders joined this initiative to learn how to use their voice and advocate for their community.
As leaders in San Jose High School, I want to provide them with a scholarship opportunity. I want to provide them with a short essay assignment explaining (1) Who they are (2) What challenges they fac? (3) How they stay motivated in school (4) Explain why Latinx/e male scholar representation is needed in high school and college.
I then want to post their photos of them with their reward and frame their essays in the College & Career Center to inspire our future generations.
The goal of this project is to, first, give them the surprise of being recognized for their voice. And that, despite being low-income, they are provided with support. The second, is to inspire the rest of the Latinx/e male folx, who often see barriers in their educational journey and need the voice of their peers to learn how academic efforts can lead to success. And finally, to help bring light to the Latino Male Initiative.
I want to make sure my students have the materials and experiences they need to succeed, so I just created a request on DonorsChoose: Latino Leadership.
If you chip in to help my students, we'll be incredibly grateful.
