We ask a key question during our second meeting with prospective clients, and the answers we get vary widely. Here’s what we often hear: 😌 "Relieved" 😩 "Stressed" → If you woke up tomorrow with $50,000,000 in the bank, how would you feel? For some, just thinking about it brings a sense of peace. For others, it's a source of intense stress. Windfalls create a HUGE mix of emotions. We’re currently working with a client who feels paralyzed by fear after receiving an inheritance. She's completely overwhelmed by the thought of selling her parents' home, managing the estate, and figuring out how the money will impact her own life. On the flip side, we have clients who, between the passing of a loved one and the funeral, are already reaching out to us to start coordinating the movement of funds. Windfalls can either propel you into action or leave you frozen. They can lead to reckless spending or cause you to hoard every penny. → Do you know how you’d react if an unexpectedly large sum landed in your lap? Here’s what I would do: 1. Take a breath. 2. List all my goals, both short and long-term. 3. Consider new goals and how they might rank. 4. Evaluate my values through a statement of financial purpose exercise (link in comments). 5. Sit down with someone I trust to talk through everything—this might involve several conversations with my partner, a financial therapist, a CPA, an attorney, and my financial planner. 6. Map out a long-term plan that ensures I have 'enough' for the future while allowing me to enjoy today. 7. What is the 'Advice Gap' ❓ It's the lack of available, or affordable, quality financial advice. There are not many places people can go for face-to-face financial advice any more, and many of the 'wealth management' firms out there won't look twice at you unless you have minimum sums to invest. 💰 There is a huge amount of evidence to show that people that get good financial advice, will be better off in the long run. So in the current environment only the wealthy get wealthier...... Somehow that doesn't sit right with me, I was raised to do good and help those in need and I believe that everyone should be able to access invaluable advice. So, in the spirit of fairness, we thought it was time we all got to know Myla a little better. 💬 Here's what she had to say: 🆀: How long have you lived in this area? What do you like about living in this community? 🅰: I have lived in Wainwright since I moved here with my family in 2007. My mom is originally from Wainwright and my dad grew up about 25 minutes south of Wainwright. I like recognizing people on the street and feel comfortable enough to strike up a conversation. Many people are very friendly and just like to chat! 🆀: Why did you want to work in this field? What interests you about financial planning? 🅰: This was a great career path that had an opportunity available when I finished university. It aligned fairly well with my undergraduate degree and I liked the idea of the advancement and long career path this could lead to. I enjoy helping people learn and understand their finances. Money is a big part of our life and I think many people worry about having enough of it. 🆀: Your work involves travelling to Vision branch communities to provide financial advisor services. What do you like about that? 🅰: It honestly breaks up the day a bit and provides a change of scenery. It also allows me to connect with different branch staff, as they are kind of in their own little world 🆀: What are the unique financial challenges that residents of rural Alberta face compared to urban areas? 🅰: There aren’t as many job opportunities in rural communities. Many people end up leaving rural areas in search of more job prospects or other opportunities in urban areas. 🆀: What misconceptions about financial planning do you encounter in your work, and what advice do you give to counter them? 🅰: I believe many people just don’t know where to start. They may not need a comprehensive plan, but possibly just a basic plan to start. They may even benefit from just working on a budget and going from there.
