What's your 'magic number'? 🐇 🎩
I'm not a huge fan of rules of thumb within finance as every client situation is unique. However, I do sometimes refer to the magic number with prospective clients.
The magic number gives you a rough idea of how big your pension pot(s) should be at retirement (assuming age 65).
Take your desired annual (before tax) income in retirement x 25 = required pot size.
So, as an example...
£40,000 per annum x 25 = £1m pot(s) size. 😮
This may sound a stretch but remember to consider other income sources:
The full State Pension is currently £11,502.40 per annum. ✅
You may have defined benefit (final salary) schemes available. ✅
You may have investment or property income. ✅
All of which lower the amount of income your pension pot(s) need to provide.
Lastly, don't forget inflation. It may not strike you as one of your biggest risks in retirement but, for most, it is. 💸
Retirement planning is fraught with complexity and one of the areas a good financial planner can really add value. 💡
