After spending 27 years in Corporate IT & Telecom, I, as destiny called, came first time to Bantala Kolkata Leather Complex in thevyear 2019 and was amazed seeing so many factories and tanneries. I joined a company producing leather accessories exporting to the USA, UK, Germany, Japan and other places as Vice President Operations & Administration (par se Factory Manager) and I had no idea of manufacturing!! But yes I have some traits proactive, adaptability, learning, adjusting, innovative and very quick learner. In 3 months I was leading several batch/ group production with inhouse own groups and external fabricators at Joynagor (was amazed to see the fabricators there and their way of functioning). Production on time Merchandising Tech packs to samples Shipment on time ( I still remember we needed 4 to 5 persons more during packing, so put everybody even a security guard and sweeper 😊 We in corporate call it "Crises Management." When Reliance Infocomm launched CDMA handsets in September 2002, most 80% couriers to customers bounced with the wrong pincodes, address errors. We set up delivery counters and delivered the handset boxes from Ground floor Reliance House, Park Street, below my table was large amount of cash, as customers paid. I was nervous but at the end of the day, I was successful, the cash tallied and all handsets delivered over 3 days 9 am to 8 pm. This note is an email to a buyer from my boss, yes I worked very very hard and gave my heart and soul to it. I was learning, I was happy with the execution from scratch - samples to production to shipment. When I see merchandisers, samples, production people battling and coordinating, I smile to myself. I know I did it. Even negotiating fabrication cost - a box stitch 2.50 inr, also inhouse costings on plain excel sheet. The materials store was made scientific with FIFO basis, a chart drawn where is whats kept. Even my boss could enter to see the chart, and take materials for the samples without taking any help from the store keeper. That was then, now I am wholly fully into Marketing, a bit of other things as well also, whenever I am required. Always having a malleable and "can do attitude" helps! --Sambit Bhattacharya

Some Red Flags! I visited a textile dye and print mill owned by a Mr. texfirefighter(Changed name) yesterday to discuss some export orders. Here are some concerns I observed: - They travel every day from Delhi to Sikandarabad (between Greater Noida and Bulandshahr) to run this mill since 2019. It's at least a 200+ KM drive each day, leaving home at 7 AM and returning around 12 AM. - Four hours daily are spent on travel, wasting a significant amount of fuel and time every day. - There is no time for growth or exploring new opportunities. - They are involved in everything, from machine operation to calculating fabric details, accounting, client dealings, and labor management. - There is no proper office space to accommodate clients. - There is no focus on presentations or samples. - They lack a growth mindset. - They claim to work limited hours, implying they only work when physically present at the factory. - They do not allow quality checkers (QCs) into their factory. - They frequently argue with labor and staff in front of clients. Are these traits conducive to attracting more work or fostering growth? Let’s discuss! #TextileIndustry #ManufacturingChallenges #BusinessGrowth #Efficiency #QualityControl #ClientManagement #Sustainability #OperationalEfficiency #GrowthMindset #ExportBusiness #TextileMill #BusinessDevelopment #IndustryInsights #Productivity

Let me share my recent adventure with Godrej Interio Kolkata Sector V store, where I discovered the art of being endlessly disappointed. Buying a bed should be simple, right? Well, not if you’re dealing with Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd. 1. False Promises, Courtesy of the Sales Executive. We were promised a spacious storage height of over 15 inches. Turns out, the actual usable height is much less, thanks to a poorly designed inner frame. It was just a figment of the sales executive's imagination. The center part of the storage is completely inaccessible because of - you guessed it - a design flaw. The cherry on top? The sales executive confidently assured us it was safe to step inside the storage. But during delivery, the bed itself has a glaring warning label stating otherwise. We were promised both a hard copy and a digital invoice. What did we get? A delivery challan. Issuing a proper invoice is too much to ask for. 2. Delivered Defective The pièce de résistance: the bed arrived broken! The main ply was cracked, and the hydraulic cover required superhuman strength to close. Bonus: the locking mechanism from the showroom - missing in action! 3. Tip-Tip Ho Gaya The delivery agents demanded a tip. Why not? They used a lift, but hey, they wanted ₹200 anyway. Customer service at its finest. 4. Customer Care or Customer Scare? After finding the defect, I contacted customer care. Here’s what I learned: They cannot send me transcripts of our conversation. This is rocket science. No higher executive is “available to talk.” Ever. Maybe they’re all on vacation. Emails to escalate the matter? Ignored. It’s like shouting into the void. 5. The Big “6-8 Weeks” Joke A technician was supposed to visit on January 8. Surprise! No one came. Later, I got a message saying the replacement part would take 6-8 weeks. SIX TO EIGHT WEEKS for a brand-new bed I paid the whole money upfront. Talk about efficiency! 6. The Replacement "Strategy" – A Masterclass in Patience We patiently waited for the replacement. Now, here’s the genius part of the process: the team plans to disassemble the bed before delivering the new part, take away the damaged part, and then wait for another 2-3 working days for someone to come back and reassemble it. In the meantime, my mother, who suffers from severe arthritis and cannot fold her knees, will once again have the privilege of sleeping on the floor. Customer well-being is a top priority here. The level of efficiency and thoughtfulness in this process is truly groundbreaking. Bravo! 👏 To my network: If you’re considering a purchase from Godrej Interio, I’d suggest thinking twice - or maybe a hundred times. Tagging some of the leadership team - because surely, they’re either already aware of this mess or might step in now to turn things around and show that customer satisfaction still matters.
