Social Media managers are humans with other parts of life outside work Social Media managers should be given time and space to get the success you desire. I believe the essence of hiring is not just to outsource but to TRUST the person you’re employing to get you results with his/her expertise. This week, I want to dive into a case study of a successful digital marketing campaign and highlight the key strategies that led to its success. The campaign I want to discuss is the "Share a Coke" campaign by Coca-Cola. This campaign was a huge success and is a great example of how a creative and well-executed digital marketing strategy can make a big impact. One of the key strategies that led to the success of the "Share a Coke" campaign was personalization. Coca-Cola created custom labels with popular names and phrases like "Bestie" and "Star" to encourage people to share a Coke with their friends and loved ones. This personalization made the product feel more special and unique, and it resonated with consumers on a personal level. Another key strategy was the use of social media and user-generated content. Coca-Cola encouraged people to share photos of themselves with their personalized Coke bottles on social media using the hashtag #ShareACoke. This not only created buzz and excitement around the campaign but also generated a ton of user-generated content that served as free advertising for the brand. Anyone hiring for marketing leadership roles needs to understand that if you need the successful candidate to build out your marketing strategy (diagnosis leading into targeting, positioning, and objectives), it doesn't make sense to also specifying that they have to be proficient in the execution of a load of specific comms tools or processes. Here are some important considerations: - If you want your marketing leader to spend a significant proportion of their average week performing tactical tasks, then you probably don't need a marketing leader. You need someone to help you put a strategy in place, then help you plug in some more cost-effective talent to handle the tactical stuff. A good marketing leader (one that truly knows how to put a strategy together and drive it within the company) should cost you upward of $150k. Why pay them >$72 per hour to manage your socials/SEM/photography/website etc. when you can pay someone $15-30 per hour. - Your strategy needs to be in place before you start looking at tactics (4Ps). If you are just copy/pasting your comms plan from last year, then there is no point doing any strategic work at all. - Ask a seasoned marketer to look over your JD before you post it. You have no idea how many ideal candidates you might be putting off applying because you are asking for things that you cannot know that you need. Not to mention the damage you might do to your employer brand by putting a JD together that any seasoned marketer could easily poke holes in. Less is more: State your big-picture goals, talk about your company culture, and make it clear you are looking for a leader to guide the way (if in fact this is what you really need). #recruiting #personnel #humanresources #marketingstrategy #marketingleadership
