🎓 Just completed Future17: an incredible journey with Mycovation Asia, my mentors Dr. Jenny Tunley Price and Dr. Jorge Eduardo S.Sarkis and my team Etian Ngobeni, Thuto Motabola, Rafael Castelfranchi and Salma Ashmawy! 🚀 Grateful for the opportunity to be part of Future17, initiated by QS Quacquarelli Symonds & University of Exeter in partnership with the Consortia of global universities: The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Stellenbosch University, the University of São Paulo, the University of Auckland, Luiss Guido Carli University, the American University in Cairo, the American University of Sharjah, Arizona State University and the UCL. It has been a transformative global challenges education program centered around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with Mycovation Asia providing the perfect platform for our diverse team to collaboratively conduct a life cycle assessment of a food product, delve into food processing, environmental impact assessments, and cost analysis. 🌏 Key Learnings: 1️⃣ Global Collaboration: Working with students from diverse backgrounds broadened my perspective and improved my ability to collaborate across cultures.    2️⃣ Impactful Solutions: Crafting actionable solutions aligned with the SDGs was challenging and rewarding. Knowing our work contributes to real-world change is truly inspiring. 3️⃣ 21st-century Skills: Future17 sharpened my critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills which are crucial assets for my future global career. 4️⃣ Enhanced Presentation and Digital Skills: Time constraints pushed me to improve my presentation and digital skills rapidly, creating a PowerPoint in a single day. 🚀 Areas for Improvement: 1️⃣ Time Management: Juggling international team schedules was challenging. I'm committed to further refining my time management skills for smoother collaboration in future projects. 2️⃣ Team working Skills: Despite regular meetings, I acknowledge the need to appreciate and actively engage with my team's work, ensuring consistent participation, timely responses, and constructive feedback. The 3-Stage Process That Makes Universities Prime Innovators Cross-sector collaborations, combining the competencies, skills, and resources of diverse actors, are increasingly seen by #academics and professionals alike as the best way to tackle complex societal and environmental issues — and universities are becoming key players in these collaborations. While calls for cross-sector collaborations to tackle complex societal issues abound, in practice, only few succeed. Those that do often have a collaboration intermediary, which can bring together different actors, develop #relationships among #collaborators, and create an ecosystem to support #ideas over time. With their strengths in #knowledge creation and their role as community anchors, #universities are ideally equipped to create and orchestrate support for the kind of innovation that the sustainability imperative requires. However, to be able to take on this role they need to develop a culture of open innovation, experimentation and iteration, and value, which requires supporting teams that will champion the change and facilitate #collaborations among the diverse actors of the #innovation #ecosystem.

DAY 5 of the OpenInnoTrain Summer School concluded with the culmination of the weeks intensive program in the form of 9 Team #Research Pitches. The 9 diverse teams (discipline, culture, academic experience, gender..) had strictly 5-minutes to deliver their pitch to our three brilliant reviewers, in front of the full Summer School cohort. The reviewers, listened to the pitches thoughtfully and expertly challenged the teams to think both deeply and broadly about their research project. In doing this, they unlocked diverse ways of seeing the same research problem, leveraging their own significant experience and expertise, to highlight critical aspects to consider through the frame of creating impact through their research. Everyone in the room learnt a great deal from both the pitches and the reviewer questions and comments! We sincerely thank all three reviewers for the generosity of their time, willingness to share their expertise, experience, and for offering us a window into how they think about, and approach, creating societal impact through research using an impact mindset. 🕑 The second edition of the Sustainable Development Goals 24 Challenge (SDG24), organized at Jagiellonian University, has ended. In teams of several people, we developed ideas and innovations that align with the sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations. 👨🏫 It was both a challenge and a pleasure. As a moderator, I had the privilege of working with creative, intelligent, and determined individuals who were full of empathy and sensitivity towards themselves and others. 📉 Using the Design Thinking method, we developed a project called NeuroSpace. It addresses contemporary challenges in universities and businesses, aiming to provide opportunities for development at the university for everyone, particularly supporting neurodiverse persons and those who work with them. 👨💼 Working with this fantastic team highlighted what I have been contemplating for a long time and what I believe is missing in today's academia: sensitivity, empathy, calmness, understanding, trust, and support. This applies to everyone—students, staff, and occasional visitors. 🙏 A big thank you to the people in my group. You have shown me that together, we can make a difference and help many people gain safer access to learning. 🚀 As I look back on 2023, I am filled with gratitude for a year full of surprises — both enjoyable and challenging. Here are a few highlights from this year: 📚Growth at KU Leuven: After joining forces with my team, we were able to complete a successful mechanical box project - Sigma Box. Shared efforts, common goals and celebrating every milestone together emphasized the power of teamwork.🧮This year was also the start of my second degree at KU Leuven - Business Engineering, a step to learn more about business, marketing, economics and more. 🛫 Participation in the International Astronautical Congres 2023: Traveling to Baku, Azerbaijan, for IAC 2023 was a surreal experience. Talking to Mr. Koichi Wakataan, an astronaut I have admired for years, about his experiences flying different spacecrafts and the differences between the Space Shuttle and SpaceX's latest Dragon, was amazing. And also sharing these moments with mentors and friends has added a new level of inspiration and connection to my year. 🌍 Discovering my community at the Academics for Technology: Discovering my own community during the AFT scholarship - Belgium Startup Trip was a profound experience. Networking, learning about innovative ideas and the startup ecosystem reinforced my belief that dreaming big opens the doors to a universe of possibilities. ⭐️Top 30 at the EU-Startups: One of the highlights was making it into the top 30 at the EU Startup Conference with MedShare. The journey with MedShare has been exciting and this recognition reinforces our commitment to making a positive difference. 🌐 Supporting the empowerment of women: Supporting initiatives like Belgium Women in Science and Perspektywy Women in Tech has allowed me to contribute to a meaningful cause. The advancement of women in STEM fields is very close to my heart and I am proud to play a small role in these communities. 📚Books: ▶️I recommend reading Oxygen - The molecule that made the world by Nick Lane to understand our climate from the perspective of this molecule. ▶️An inspiring book for me this year was also Screw It, Let us Do It by Richard Branson. ▶️And Another one would be The Space Barons: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and the Quest to Colonize the Cosmos by Christian Davenport if you want to learn more about the background of the private space sector. As we head into 2024, remember: if you dream big, the universe will fall into place around you. Cheers to another year of growth, resilience and realizing our dreams come true! 🚀✨ #DreamBig

🚀 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 🌍 I recently had the privilege of speaking with Monica Sanders from Authority Magazine, where we explored the vital role education plays in driving sustainability and climate justice. Here are some key insights from our conversation that highlight why this mission is so crucial: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗕𝗶𝗴: Small, actionable steps can lead to significant change over time. At Tomorrow University, we began with one sustainability degree. Today, it's a core element of more than 30 degree programs (MBA, Master, Bachelor), empowering students to address global challenges with innovative solutions. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝘆: Real change happens when communities are involved. By engaging our students in local sustainability projects, we've seen firsthand how community involvement can amplify impact and foster long-term success. 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: Tracking the outcomes of sustainability initiatives is essential. We use internal metrics to continuously refine our approach, ensuring that our efforts lead to tangible, positive results. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Partnerships with organizations and industry experts have brought invaluable resources and insights to our programs. Collaboration is essential in scaling efforts and driving broader change. 𝗕𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁: Real transformation takes time.
