August 18, 1943: At Bridgeport, Connecticut, Sikorsky's chief test pilot, Charles Lester ("Les") Morris, conducted the inaugural flight of the Vought-Sikorsky VS-327, serial number 33. Also referred to as the Sikorsky Model S-48, the U.S. Army Air Corps designated this helicopter as the XR-5 and assigned it the serial number 43-28236. The XR-5 represented a significant advancement over its predecessor, the R-4. Its streamlined narrow fuselage improved aerodynamics, while the cockpit provided excellent visibility. The box-like design of the R-4 had hindered air flow from the main rotor, a factor carefully considered in the design of the new helicopter. The Sikorsky XR-5 (Model S-48) was a single-engine, two-seat helicopter. Its cabin featured aluminum construction with plexiglass windows, while the fuselage was made of plastic-impregnated plywood, and the tail boom employed a wood monocoque design. The main rotor consisted of three fully articulated blades constructed from wood spars and ribs, covered with fabric. The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird's Astro-inertial Navigation System (ANS) was a marvel of engineering, allowing it to navigate at incredible speeds and altitudes with remarkable accuracy. The ANS used a specialized camera to track the positions of specific stars throughout its flight. By knowing the precise locations of these stars and comparing them to their observed positions, the system could calculate the aircraft's latitude and longitude. This part consisted of gyroscopes and accelerometers that measured the aircraft's movements and changes in speed and direction. This information helped to continuously update the star-based position data, even when the stars were temporarily obscured by clouds. A complex onboard computer processed the data from the star tracker and inertial platform, making calculations and adjustments to maintain the desired flight path. Despite traveling at Mach 3 (over 2,300 miles per hour), the ANS kept the SR-71 within 1,000 feet of its intended course.
