Navigating Your Local Government can be a very frustrating and complicated task without knowledge as to how it works. Even though these offices are actually staffed to assist the average ‘Joe/Jane the plumber’, community leaders, residents and clergy, for the most part, find that reaching and finding the right staff member can be very difficult. This workshop will help you to: •Discover why it is important to meet your elected officials •Learn the art of partnership and collaboration •Identify who to contact and for what •Gain knowledge of how to get elected to your congregation in a non-election year, •Capture the differences between the federal, state, city offices. What does 2024 look like for local authorities? Here are just a few of the headlines I've seen in the last week: "Councils in crisis", "Local government's reputation is at stake", "Council bankruptcy tracker". This article is a welcome reminder that officers and members in local government are working hard to build resilient and resourceful councils, but that increasingly there simply isn't enough money. Councils are facing staggering levels of debt, ever shrinking budgets and increased demand. Cuts to council funding from central government may have had some impact on the national deficit, but they have transferred debt, blame and impact onto local authorities. For residents they will see their council tax rise and their services decrease in availability or quality. Councils have and will continue to be at the forefront of innovation, striving to find ways to maintain services with vastly reduced budgets, absorbing significant risk in the process. While officers and members are working hard to maintain support for services, for communities that they care deeply about, it is not surprising that residents are frustrated. This week I'm thinking about - how can councils engage in honest conversations with residents in their area about the challenges they face? (Great examples of this in Oxfordshire with a budget simulator run by Carole Stow's team) What examples of innovation and survival can we see around the country? (I've been interested to read about Barnsley Council who won council of the year 2023 for their transformative approach to place-based decision-making)
“The reality is that most councils are well managed, and by people who care desperately about their communities.” Watch BBC News profile the tough choices Bill Revans and Somerset Council have to make this year. We’re calling for government action: https://lnkd.in/eMasYcAt

The recent presidential debate was a reminder of the deep divisions within our political landscape. Unfortunately, on the local level, we are too familiar with what transpired on Thursday, given all that happened in the last couple weeks with our own city officials. While it showcased the candidates’ policy differences, it often devolved into distractions and personal attacks, overshadowing substantive discussion. For voters seeking clear policy outlines and respectful discourse, the debate might have been disappointing. Like many who wish we had better options, I say your better options lie with your local officials. Your local officials have more impact on your day-to-day lives than the U.S. president. This is because your local officials live in your neighborhood, and their actions have a direct impact on you in a way that a president’s actions might not. So, come Nov. 5th, your local officials should be your utmost concern. Therefore, to have a better chance of reviving our beloved city, look no further! It’s time to bring a positive aura to The Town! #letsreviveoaklandtogether #letsgettowork #westoakland #oaklandcitycouncilmember #thebottom

If you live on the Sunshine Coast, in 60 days, you will vote for your Division Councillor and your Mayor. So, what does that mean to you? You decide who: • leads, manages and provides strategic direction for the Sunshine Coast • represents you on a local, state, national and international level • sets the tone by leading and managing council meetings, working alongside fellow elected councillors and manages unsuitable meeting conduct • provides high-quality leadership to the Sunshine Coast Council CEO to ensure the corporate plan is achieved • participates in council meetings for policy development and decision-making • ensures compliance with applicable laws • ensures legislative compliance • is accountable to the community for the Sunshine Coast Council’s performance. What many people don’t know is that the Mayor only has one vote alongside their fellow Councillors, unless there is a tie where the Mayor makes the casting vote. So, who you vote as your Division Councillor and who you elect as your Mayor will significantly impact the success of your region. Over the coming week, I will share why I know I am the Mayoral Candidate of Choice to lead a new era in Council. Polling booths open on the 4th March, with Saturday 16th March being the official election day. #minformayor #teammin #teamsunshinecoast #mayor2024
