I believe customers are like Truffula Trees: "Truffula Trees are what everyone needs. Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care. Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air."
1 year ago this week, I got laid off. I went to bed the night before absolutely certain I was getting laid off the next day, and told my husband. Sure enough, by 9AM I had "the meeting" on my calendar. My summer was spent applying, interviewing, and doing a lot of stress baking. But I also took the time to make sure I picked the right next step for me. One of the most important things for me was a company who had a target customer that I had emotional resonance with. I lucked out: I found a fantastic company with a great team. I'm not posting this as one of those self-promoting posts that are all too common on LinkedIn these days – I'm sharing because Collective is hiring for a lot of roles right now, with more to come. While we don't have a cute "ian" name for our team, we do have: - A remote-friendly workforce (even roles that are location-specific don't require daily office trips, unless you want that.) - Genuinely nice people to work with - A culture that values transparency, willing to try new things, and progress over perfection. Sound like a fit? Take a look at our open roles: https://lnkd.in/gnAYnBR4

Here's what nobody tells you about hiring top talent: It's not about your company. It's not about your brand. It's not about your perks. It's about them. 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀: - A chance to grow - An opportunity to learn - A chance to make an impact - A team that's dedicated to excellence - A manager who's a true leader and mentor 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿: - Craft a job posting that's not the same as everyone's. - Make it clear that they'll learn and grow in your company. - Emphasize the impact they'll have on the company. - Show them the values that you're passionate about. - Demonstrate that you're invested in their professional development. With every move, ask yourself: "𝘈𝘮 𝘐 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺'𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦?" Put them first, and soon enough, they'll put you first too.

We were afraid to hire a newbie. What if they mess up? I'm glad we did. They were fearless enough to say, "I don't know." - They asked questions - They challenged convention - They thought outside the box Do you know what top-performing companies look for in their first hire? They look for someone with two things: 1) Humility: the willingness to learn and admit what they don't know. 2) Hunger: the drive and motivation to figure it out and succeed. Skills can be learned, but these two traits are inherent. So, next time you're hiring, don't be afraid to hire a newbie. Look for someone with humility and hunger, and watch them transform into a top performer.
