Vogtle 4 set to enter commercial operation this year. It's the 2nd year in a row the USA has finally added a new reactor to our aging fleet. The plant will provide enough power for nearly ONE MILLION American homes. This is a Westinghouse AP1000 which comes with some major improvements over older designs: Safety Features: One of the hallmark features of the AP1000 is its passive safety systems that require no human intervention and can operate without electrical power or external water supply. This is a major advancement over older designs, which rely more on active safety systems. Simplified Design: The AP1000 has fewer components than earlier designs, which reduces the potential for mechanical failure and simplifies maintenance. For example, it uses natural circulation and gravity-driven safety systems that reduce the need for mechanical pumps and other moving parts. Improved Efficiency: The AP1000 is designed to produce more electrical power (about 1100 megawatts electric) compared to many older PWRs. It also features improved thermal efficiency! Construction Time and Cost: The design of the AP1000 aims to reduce both construction costs and times through modular construction techniques. Components of the reactor are built in sections off-site and assembled on-site. Licensing and Deployment: The design has been approved in multiple countries, and its standardized design is intended to bring with it the benefits of economy of scale through mass production. Focused on collaborative efforts among key stakeholders, the alliance aims to fortify the nuclear supply chain, support specific SMR projects, and identify investment opportunities. This crucial initiative plays a pivotal role in #decarbonizing challenging sectors like transport, chemicals and steel.   In a keynote speech at the European Investment Bank Group Forum yesterday, European Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, Maroš Šefčovič, underscored the importance of restoring technology neutrality for a sustainable energy future. Recognizing the role of low-carbon sources like hydrogen, he announced the launch of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in collaboration with Member States and industry. Šefčovič highlighted the potential of SMR technology in decarbonizing the energy sector and boosting #energysecurity. Tennessee Valley Authority is planning to build four GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 small modular reactors at its Clinch River site in Tennessee but has not fully committed to the project, and it’s not entirely clear that will happen any time soon. Amid a resurgence in US energy demand, the federally-owned utility is still working on its planned Integrated Resource Plan, which could be delayed beyond this year as TVA considers various new decarbonization policies.
