I just have time to wrapped up my mind on the Climate Change AI Virtual Summer School 2024! ☀️ The past 13 weeks have been opened my brain into the intersection of climate change and AI. The course covered a wide range of topics, providing insights into how AI can be leveraged to address (or involve) the climate crisis. Thank Sitthichat Sukpholtham for inviting me in! Here are some of the key areas we explored: - AI for Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use 🚜🌳 - AI for Biodiversity and Ecosystems 🌱🐾 - AI for Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification 📊 - AI for Social Sciences, Economics and Policy 🌎 - AI for Buildings and Cities 🏙️ - GHG Impact Assessment of AI ♻️ - AI for Transportation 🚗 Some materials that I personally found interesting: - Large-scale pre-trained geospatial models [https://lnkd.in/gswrZUuU] - TorchGeo [https://lnkd.in/g6sz7wbG] - IPCC Report 2023 [https://lnkd.in/gRpEtNET] - Copernicus Open Data Platform [https://lnkd.in/g9t7DHBd] - Using Explainable Machine Learning to Understand How Urban Form Shapes Sustainable Mobility [https://lnkd.in/gAas4WZ4] - CodeCarbon [https://lnkd.in/g6twtxx2] One reflection on pain-point to develop or utilize the AI for climate change area is it not much about the advancement in the AI model capability but it is all about "Data" and "Platform" to manage those data To capture the environmental data, we require hardware (Satellite, Marine Sensor, Pressure Sensor, Camera etc.) to be in placed somewhere on earth (Forest, Ocean or even Space) to keep measure and monitor the world state which make it even harder to start collecting the data. Data also can come in various formats from disparate sources, making integration and standardization a significant hurdle. It is also a lack of standardized data platforms and protocols hinders data sharing and collaboration among researchers and stakeholders. In my opinion, to address these challenges requires joint efforts from researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and international organizations. Collaboration, open data sharing, investment in infrastructure, and a focus on interpretability and accessibility are key to harnessing the full potential of AI in tackling the climate crisis. #ClimateChangeAI #AIforGood #Sustainability

AI will increasingly help us to face the challenge of climate change. How we will exist in a rapidly heating world where resources are depleting? It’s a question that keeps many of us awake at night. And while many of us are, so far, largely unscathed, it is our responsibility to leave the world a better place for the generations that follow. This idea, and the seemingly endless possibilities presented by AI, mean that maybe, just maybe, there’s something to be done.
Is AI our best shot to save the world from climate change?

Harnessing AI to Transform Climate Action! I. AI will transform climate and nature action 1. Supercharged and holistic science Breaking through today's scientific siloes and replacing the slow, brittle creation of “integrated assessment models” with a network of live, scientifically rigorous, and dynamically updated “digital twins” of the entire global system at all scales – climate, nature, economics, geology, etc. 2. Reliable observation and forecasting Using digital twins for relevant ecosystems and networks, reliable and interpretable estimates of historical and future Earth states will become accessible to the public 3. Democratized decision-making co-pilots Leaders will be able to make more data-informed decisions, or defer these decisions to AI-generated recommendations for win-win strategies, which can help to negotiate tradeoffs between multiple actors II. Opportunities 1. Agriculture AI-powered smart farms become the norm, and data-driven insights and pre-programmed and autonomous decision-making would guide every aspect of agricultural practice 2. Biodiversity AI-powered drones can patrol vast landscapes and ocean depths, alike, surveying biodiversity levels, identifying invasive species, and detecting signs of habitat degradation 3. Cities With ubiquitous connectivity and increased deployment of decentralized and connected AI infrastructure, cities can be reimagined as regenerative hubs, optimized for sustainability, resilience, and equity 4.
