For wireless CSPs, AI for RAN (Radio Access Network) is one of the most important elements in RAN evolution for next decade and beyond. AI plays a key role in various aspects of the RAN, including radio functions, predictions, and control loops, which differ from generic plug-and-play AI tools. If you like to learn how AI can be leveraged in RAN operation, the various phases of AI RAN evolution, challenges and success factors in the CSP journey for AI in RAN (and the solutions), read on this comprehensive and insightful “AI value in RAN” report published by our RAN Automation and AI experts. I find it very useful and I believe many of us will too. Some takeaways worth highlighting: 1. AI in RAN starts with “Rule based feature implementation”, then evolves to “AI powered feature implementation”, to “AI Native feature implementation” , and ultimately “Intent driven AI native RAN” which integrate AI native traffic steering, AI native L2 scheduler as examples. 2. To support this journey, AI in RAN needs specialized knowledge of RAN software and hardware, along with customized AI solutions designed specifically for the unique requirements of RAN, rather than generic, plug-and-play AI tools. Vendor partnerships give head start in managing data in a cost-effective and best-use oriented approach. 3. A new architecture is needed for AI and automation that combines both distributed automation (millisecond time scale) and centralized automation (> 1 second time scale) where rApps and SMO (service management orchestration) platform plays critical role 4. The five required capabilities of the AI system include inference, retraining, assurance, explainability, and experimentation (Ericsson has already deployed and tested such capabilities, which are implemented in the AI model lifecycle) 5. Getting AI to work in RAN will require a large amount of collaboration, including data-sharing, use case collaboration and tuning, and adopting best-practices and tools. 6. The challenges in adopting AI in RAN by CSP can be roughly divided into two areas: organizational challenges, and technology and tool adoption challenges (data management, Life cycle management, hardware). a. Organizations need to creating a coherent strategy with clear and achievable targets supported across the company to ensure proper collaboration, competence, digitalization technologies, and optimal data management. b. To overcome technology challenges, CSPs need to plan the data management strategy with AI in mind.
