Red, white and blue... Now let's clean up too! The San Diego Community Power team spent the morning of July 5 at Surfrider Foundation San Diego County's Morning After Mess, where a group of dedicated volunteers picked up trash leftover from San Diego's busiest beach day of the year, July 4. A big thank you to Surfrider and everyone who helped keep San Diego clean and green!

The skyrocketing evictions occurring nationwide are having an impact on people and their beloved pets. Overflowing animal shelters have also become a national crisis. The dip in adoptions along with the rise in dog intake from unclaimed strays and owner surrenders is a complete 180 from the surge in adoptions of dogs and cats we saw during the pandemic. According to Shelter Animals Count (SAC), stray dogs taken in by shelters have risen 6% in the January to November 2023 period compared to 2022 and are up a whopping 22% since 2021! I had a great call with two people involved with Braver Angels presence in Nevada. It seems like a small (for now) driven group looking to build some bridges – my kind of bunch! What struck me most about the call was that it was all about politics, but there was only a fleeting reference to someone’s substantive political beliefs. We weren’t talking about the “what” of our political beliefs; we were talking about the “how” of our politics and how political opponents relate to each other. I’m excited that some opportunities to help seem to play to my strengths, and I am now an official member of Braver Angels! Look for more on that topic to come. For those of you unfamiliar with the group’s work, they promote substantive, respectful conversations across political divides that help us understand each other better. They do this through structured dialogue - and you know structured dialogue warms a collaborative lawyer’s heart! In the comments, I’ll link to a video of one of their debates. If you are interested in promoting efforts to reduce the temperature of our politics, check out their website and consider attending an event or becoming a member! #bettertogether

This is one of the ways I fill my 'community bucket' - by volunteering at the Ottawa Community Foundation, on the board, the Grants Committee and the Impact Investing Committee. If you are not familiar - OCF is your community impact broker, helping to bring together so many parts of Ottawa, to pool together our funds and use that to re-invest in our community. We connect people looking for ways to invest their funds for the good of the community (donors), with local nonprofits/charities (service providers) serving those who can really use that investment (community members or causes). And the causes we support are driven by what's needed and what's important to the people who make up our city - so range from social services to health to education to arts and culture to heritage to environment to animal rights. I love volunteering here because it helps me feel connected to the heartbeat of Ottawa across all of our diversity - from grassroots local community groups to donors and funders to business leaders to policy makers. As individuals we are each plugged into to different parts of our city, geographically or sectorally or demographically. But here, we are all united through our common interest in making our city a better place for everyone. So here's a little window into the amazing work that's happening in our city everyday, thanks to all these different folks coming together, each doing our part, to lift each other up.
