Moving scientific discoveries to patients requires the expertise and support of many groups. At “Innovating for Cures,” a recent event held at The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology, innovators, philanthropists and venture capital investors shared their thoughts on accelerating biomedical research advances to people with significant unmet medical needs. Benjamin Patz, managing partner of DeepWork Capital, manager of the #FloridaOpportunityFund, shared some encouraging statistics: 38,000 tech companies and more than 120 billion-dollar companies are based in #florida . Florida ranks fourth in the United States for total #technologyjobs , with over 440,000. Florida was also No. 1 in the nation in both 2021 and 2022 for new technology businesses established. Today, Florida universities invest more than $1.4 billion annually in life-science R&D, he noted. “We believe there’s an opportunity to invest here in Florida,” Patz said. The event was jointly sponsored by The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology; UF Innovate | Accelerate, the University of Florida’s technology licensing arm; and DeepWork Capital, a venture capital group that manages the Florida Opportunity Fund. I was invited to speak today as #keynote panelist at Future Labs Live Basel and share my thoughts as #investor on ‚„How do we create a synergised lab community at the forefront of science, innovation and digital technology?“ my fellow panelists included Vincent R. (moderator, CSEM )(euRobotics aisbl) Zisis Kozlakidis (World Health Organization) Dr. Bernd Liepert and Thomas Bauernhansl (Technologiemanagement am Fraunhofer IPT). What did I share with panel and audience: 1) collaboration and multidisciplinary approach is key to realize innovative idea 2) academia to provide holistic training to scientists to become entrepreneurs, taking the risk founding a start up 3) public-private partnership and funding is key to finance basic research and support spin-off from university to generate first data to enable financing round with private investors 4) European investors are rather risk averse which on one hand leads to good investment and higher return of investment than other territories investors but this means huge challenge for European start ups to access financing 5) need for collaboration between industry and regulators to develop pragmatic legislation while ensuring patients safety at highest priority to also support innovation and not unrealistic burden for start ups 6) increase cooperation between big corporates and start ups to accelerate innovation and time to market 7) encourage people, especially those with Know-how in the field to consider also direct investment where they can also support start ups with Know-how 8) and finally what is in my heart to increase significantly the number of women in venture capital firms as well as private investors to change current situation where female founders hardly get financing from investors We need diversity in all aspects to solve the today and tomorrow problems Thanks very much to Ellie Whitehead for organizing this very interesting event and Vincent R. for excellent moderation and my fellow panelists for stimulating discussions #start-ups #innovation #collaboration #meaningful investment #multi-disciplinary #female founders #public-private partnership #Innosuisse #sustanability

This video is just a peek into the extraordinary hard work that has been put in over the past few months from everyone involved - especially by the 11 companies who completed the Founders at the University of Cambridge Start 1.0 Accelerator Programme. We're so proud of this initiative, and we can't wait to see where it takes our founders, and us, next. #Innovation #Founders #UniversityOfCambridge #Investors #DemoDay
Here's a little glimpse into last week's incredible Investor Demo Day and the journey that we've been on with our first Start 1.0 Accelerator Programme 👀 For the past 12 weeks, the 11 University of Cambridge companies worked extremely hard to refine their propositions, work with EIRs and develop their technology into what we believe will be globally impactful businesses. As our MD Gerard Grech said "They simply aced it in every way". Covering life sciences, climate tech, biotech & materials science, the demo day was an opportunity for them to introduce their businesses to hundreds of top investors. This truly is just the beginning. We invite you to follow each and every one of them - you're going to want to see where they journey to next, and be with them all the way: AetoSense, BioTryp Therapeutics, BravelyCultured, Cambridge Vision Technology, Molyon, Nanomation, Orbit, Protonera, VOLTQUANT, William Oak Diagnostics, and Xterna. For a deeper dive into each company in the Start Accelerator 1.0 Cohort, please visit our website here: https://bit.ly/4a3gbUw Thank you again to everyone who helped make Thursday's event happen.
