Good news! The U.S. Department of Education has issued a letter of guidance to Chief State School Officers encouraging schools on how federal education dollars can be used for arts education in developing a well-rounded education through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The letter states: “Arts education—including dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts—is key to equitable access to a well-rounded education and central to our shared commitment to ensure that every student receives high-quality instruction that prepares them to be active, engaged, and lifelong learners.” Why is this news a big deal? The letter clarifies that school districts can “use Title I, Part A funds to bolster arts education programs as a strategy to support students attending Title I schools with a high percentage of low-income families in meeting the State’s challenging academic standards.”

Theatre making, mentoring and arts program and venue leadership specialist. Facilitator of learner-led theatre experiences and advocate for innovation, disruption and student agency in the arts.
As a theatre specialist teacher and director of theatre with, for and by young people, I take very seriously my responsibility for the composition of arts events programming and curriculum unit of inquiry design to ensure diverse and relevant representation. How mindful are we as arts educators of advocating for diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice when we decide on texts and statements of inquiry of study and production? Are the identities into which our young people are evolving adequately represented and celebrated?

Excellent docu series that reinforces the importance of improving literacy outcomes for our children and youth. The film ask the important question; what is happening to our youth in these schools? It also reaffirms my strong belief that Black children must be taught who they are and the richness of their ancestry. Having a strong cultural identity is a must. #Thebookshelfproject #BlackChildrenAreReaders #BlackExcellence #BlackExcellenceMatters #Woke #StayWoke #WokeMatters https://lnkd.in/ew75XqWG
