Celebrating National Intern Day 🎉
Sandia converts nearly 70% of eligible interns to full-time employees and holds several dynamic, interactive events to help interns learn more about opportunities across the Labs.
“Getting to learn firsthand about what I could be doing in the future is really exciting,” said a Sandia intern.

Learn fast, build faster⏱️
Sandia’s rapid development connector team is transforming how it produces custom electronic connectors for weapons systems — cutting fabrication and delivery time from a year to a month.
“We’re really excited for the potential impact this project can have. We’re constantly expanding our capabilities and the types of work we can take on,” “said Michael Gallegos, the program’s lead mechanical engineer.

A meaningful internship for students and the climate 🌎
Each summer Sandia’s Future of Research for Climate, Earth and Energy Intern Institute provides about 150 university students with real-world experience working on climate change, geosciences and energy research projects.
“I have a real passion for interns; I think they are the future of this laboratory,” said Kyle Jones, co-manager of the institute. “One of the institute’s goals is to attract new talent to the Labs. I look at interns as team members doing real research. I want an intern program to foster a mentality that makes them feel like they are making a difference.”

Digital engineering takes center stage.
Sandia hosted more than 500 people for the third annual Digital Engineering Workshop. Promoting collaboration and strengthening the field is a top priority for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
“Digital engineering will improve execution and accuracy, while reducing the need to translate data from one tool to another,” said Deputy Labs Director Laura McGill.

Sandia at the U.S. Senate 🏛️
Sandia’s Jennifer Gaudioso testified before Congress on how national labs scientists are poised to advance artificial intelligence to address some of the most complex scientific and national security challenges.
“We know we can build much more exquisite and impactful models if we train them on the data we have in the Department of Energy. If we can test a chemistry model, with the trusted chemistry knowledge encoded in it, we can use that to make science go much faster and make connections that no human is ever going to make,” said Jennifer Gaudioso, a chemist by training.

The world’s first hydrogen-powered commercial ferry ⛴️
Sea Change is currently operating in the San Francisco Bay and is safe for passengers thanks to a Sandia invention that vents potentially flammable vapors away from the ship.
“By using a Flow Assist Vent Mast, the venting structure can be shorter, lighter, and safer, which makes it easier to have a hydrogen fueled boat be attractive and more widely accepted. It will be exciting to have more hydrogen fuel cell vessels because they are quieter, reduce air pollution, and completely prevent polluting fuel spills because hydrogen cannot be trapped by water. It will be a benefit for everyone, everywhere,” said Sandia fluid dynamicist Myra Blaylock.
