What is the most under-represented genre right now in competitive PC gaming?
For a while I thought it may be RTS, but it's clear now that Arena FPS is in the most challenging place. RTS is poised to have a huge resurgence with Frost Giant Studios, Inc. Stormgate as well as ZeroSpace on the horizon. The genre has done well to weather difficult times since the fall of SC2 from the limelight and it's been great seeing competition continue and other games like Age Of Empires do well again.
Arena FPS on the other hand hasn't been so hot. The flame has been kept alive by Quake but only just. With the collapse of QPL recently, players are returning to QuakeLive, but with no game on the horizon to spark renewed interest or to pull in newer audiences, it's hard to say what's next. It feels like there's an opportunity for a developer to reinvigorate the space, but after so many failed attempts, perhaps it's simply too risky and we'll still be playing QuakeLive in another 10 years.
