Sometimes, even the best intentions can harm our team if we aren't careful. However, separating intentions from impact requires us to identify habits that are well-intentioned on the surface but have a negative impact in the long run. Here are some great examples via Nihar Chhaya: 🚨Seeking constant agreement: Allowing conflict encourages independent thinking and innovation. 🚨Overprotecting the team: Honest and transparent coaching is necessary for everyone's growth. 🚨Getting results without learning: Taking the time to reflect on achievements ensures that everyone is aligned on the best path forward. 🚨Being too involved (or not at all): Effective leadership is about finding balance so that you remain accessible and active without overstepping. 🚨Being everyone's friend: Chhaya reminds us that personal affiliation isn't the same as team work. The words "I don't know" can feel scary to say, but they hold ✨ so much power✨. In Leadership or management situations where you want to assert yourself as a subject matter expert, it can be easy to feel like you have to know the answer all the time. But here's the beauty, the reason your team exists is so that you have the opportunity to work with one another, balance each other's strengths, and grow together. When a Leader says: "I don't know... ▶ ...but let's find out" You have the opportunity to foster collaboration and continuous improvement ▶...have you thought about it, what do you think?" You are giving your team the opportunity to stretch, grow, and develop, and creating a safe environment for experimental thinking and innovation. ▶...right now, but I'll find out when we should expect to hear about that and get back to you" You are developing trust and showing authenticity. What you certainly don't want is a Leader that is guessing answers, or giving information that isn't accurate or confirmed.
