The latest in this interesting body of research on the impact of health care coverage on recidivism provides further evidence of the social and economic value of publicly funded health systems. While the evidence base is primarily built on the US Medicaid context, there are likely to be lessons here for decisions regarding primary care access barriers, funding of mental health and addiction services, and even the potential for the public system to encompass dental care. https://lnkd.in/gEccizYw.

The current mental health system does not allow many people to get the services they need when and where they need them, especially individuals on Medicare or Medicaid. A new report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) of Inspector General finds that Medicare and Medicaid have a dire shortage of mental health care providers. At Nexus, we are determined to fill gaps in services, but as Margaret Vimont, our Vice President of Growth and Community Services, mentions we need a collective will to change this shortage. A new government report finds that access to mental health care is extremely limited. This is especially true for individuals with Medicare and Medicaid who face high rates of mental illness, a dire shortage of providers, and long wait or travel times for appointments. Array is proud to partner with many national and regional Medicare and Medi-Cal health plans to ensure members receive the timely care they deserve. Access to telehealth can avoid commutes and connect to patients who may not have the ability, the means, or the time to travel to mental health appointments. Array's mission is to help more individuals reach the care they need, when they need it. Our virtual services bridge gaps in care, addressing shortages and eliminating transportation barriers. We’re committed to removing obstacles and advancing mental health treatment for all. https://lnkd.in/gYbenbf9 #HealthcareInnovations #HealthEquity #ArrayBehavioralCare

President and CEO, The SCAN Foundation | Physician | Adjunct Professor | Forbes 50 over 50 | Chief Member
I'm heartened by the recent developments in federal budgeting that prioritize issues affecting older adults. It's too common for these concerns to be sidelined; therefore, the emphasis on funding for #HCBS and increased access to behavioral and mental health supports in the FY25 healthcare budget is a positive step forward. This is particularly crucial given the recent findings from The Brookings Institution highlighting the suicide crisis among older adults in America. With more financial resources allocated to older adult health, we can better ensure that all older adults can access the care they need most. #behavioralhealth #olderadults
The SCAN Foundation is encouraged by several health and aging measures proposed by the Biden-Harris Administration for FY25 to address critical issues that affect older adults. By investing in the expansion and improvement of Medicaid home and community-based services, support for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Administration for Community Living (ACL) to partner to address older adult suicide, and dedicated funding for the next White House Conference on Aging, older adults in America are afforded more resources and opportunities to age well with dignity and purpose. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 20% of people over the age of 55 have experienced a behavioral health issue. With the growing senior population and rising mental health and substance use issues among this demographic, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are looking for new approaches to address behavioral health concerns. “Mental health and substance use disorder in elderly and disabled populations is well understood and is also a growing need, while at the same time, we continue to have workforce shortages,” Dr. Katherine Hobbs, MD MPH, Author Health CEO, said during Behavioral Health Business’ VALUE event. “So opening up access to different types of providers and different types of services is critically important for us to be able to meet the future need.” #behavioralhealth #mentalhealth #valuebasedcare #medicare https://lnkd.in/guBD72tY

It is possible that some individuals do not gain access to the SSDI program until their medical conditions have progressed further and become more severe than for individuals in other groups. The researchers only have data on the health outcomes of SSDI recipients; they do not have information on those who are not admitted. This highlights significant racial and ethnic disparities in SSDI entry and health outcomes. Learn more in the full study: https://zurl.co/oZkM #SSDI #HealthcareEquity #DisabilityRights
