Director | NonProfit Advisory Services at Forvis Mazars | She/Her

I am so thankful to FORVIS for closing our offices last week so we could enjoy deep rest. My rest took the form of umpteen hours of k-drama binging and a collective 14 hours of Lego-ing, as well as spending time with my family and cooking and baking and other things that bring me joy. The fruits of last week’s labor may look different from my normal work products, but the principles practiced are the same: 1- We can do hard things. 2- Pay attention to detail. 3- Documentation is KEY. 4- Trust the process. 5- Get comfortable in the mess, because the middle steps rarely look like the end result. 6- What looks like a just another block might be an opportunity, if you can reimagine it and get it in the right spot. 7- Don’t forget a piece. Inclusion is key to the strength of any structure. 8- When the hours are long, celebrate small wins to keep going. What sorts of activities bring you joy? What parallels can you find to your work? If there aren’t any, you might be doing the wrong work!

Sarah, I always think that you are insightful, but I loved how you married every day golden rules with work mantras. The parallels are at the same time, obvious and striking Since we kill a lot of green things in my house unfortunately, one of my gifts to my husband was the Lego Zen garden that you showcased above, because we cannot keep a real bonsai tree alive. Building the cherry tree was my favorite part. We got to spend time together and have something that lasts. Enjoy the Zen 🧘

The enjoyment that legos bring me is embarrassing. The kits these days are insane! Check out “Raya and the Heart Palace” for the craziest one we have seen / completed so far. When I convince my little one to take it apart we can send it to you because it’s against the rules to ever build it again, lol.
