Frustrating reality about media relations: Hard work doesn’t always result in press coverage ✅Timing ✅A reporter’s inbox, or workload, or interest level, or tolerance for sifting through pitches that day ✅ The story you have to pitch isn’t that strong, and your best efforts to shine it up and make it as relevant/newsworthy as you can just aren’t good enough this time ✅Breaking hard news ✅Breaking offbeat news Are all forces beyond your control that can impact whether your pitch breaks through or even gets read. If it didn’t go your way today, don’t let it throw you. Dust yourself off and get ‘em next week.

100% - and can be difficult to explain this nuance to stakeholders, but it really is a mix hard work, preparation, and sometimes a little bit of luck.

Timing is spot on. Months of work in the background, strategically timing the campaign and pitch, then some uncontrollable news story breaks. Don't you wish there was a magic ball we could look into?

I had one recently that had all the right ingredients but was not the angle the media wanted to take on a very widely covered issue. It was coming at it from a different lense and holy moly was it hard to find someone to listen, dispite every outlet running some very related story in the same timeframe.

It's definitely the most frustrating part of the job but the reason why it's so dang fun and fulfilling when pitches do land and result in coverage!

Breaking news knocking off a story brings back memories! Agree with your post, Sarah. Be okay with rejection. Consistency and resiliency go a long ways.
