The Sarasota County Commission invited Sarasota County Heavy Truck Technician and U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, Lawrence Jack Lyon to lead Tuesday's meeting in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lyon served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Corporal. During his time in service, his unit went to Australia for training and had the opportunity to have a mock war with the Australian Army and the Marine Recon. He is active in his community, helping others with automotive service and serving with his local church. Thank you for your service!

What is the difference between thinking tactically and thinking strategically? Everett Dolman defines thinking tactically as seeking culmination while thinking strategically seeks continuation. Thinking tactically seeks a conclusion and forces an adversary into limited options. It could also be organizing your group's means only towards a given "end." Thinking strategically seeks continuation. It seeks a position that provides a continuing advantage and keeping multiple options available. For me, the visualization of a tournament bracket to demonstrate tactical thinking and its reversal to understand strategic thinking was helpful. Business Strategy

You might look at this and think it has nothing to do with project management… I look at it and think that it takes someone with project management skills to identify the capability that needs to be trained, develop a plan for how to build that capability, calculate the time and costs to train the capability, identify risks to accomplishing the training plan (as well as risks to the personnel), communicate the plan and risk to stakeholders and decision-makers, and assign the responsibilities for executing the series of training events that ultimately creates the capability for the organization. Finally, someone to assess the training program and iterate to improve effectiveness. We have amazing people in the military that have these skills and can coordinate to safely provide “sketchy” capabilities, but may need help with learning and translating their skills into the project management frameworks that are standard in civilian job roles. Let’s help them figure it out. ——————————————— I’m Nate Champion. 🔔 Follow me for more posts on translating your skills into project management (it works for non-veterans too!) 🪖Veterans, let’s help transitioning servicemembers figure it out.

April 23 marks the birthday of the United States Army Reserve. Following World War I, under the National Defense Act of 1920, Congress reorganized the United States land forces by authorizing a Regular Army, a National Guard, and an Organized Reserve (Officer Reserve Corps and Enlisted Reserve Corps) of thirty-five divisions, which later became the #ArmyReserve. I highly recommend accessing these and seeing what our competitive writters are writting about, how they are writting, and consider what your topic would be for next year. Just doing the first two will make you better in your profession. What topics are we missing?

In my life I've had many ask, and I know others wonder, what makes the Marine Corps unique and why do we insist on calling ourselves Marines, not Soldiers? It's because, seen below, to become a Marine is one of the hardest things to do in the US military. A US Marine's basic requirement, The Crucible, is in the top 3 hardest training in the US armed services with Navy Seal and Army Ranger training. The difference is EVERY Marine must go through the Crucible before they can graduate Boot Camp and earn the title of a US Marine. Not all make it but if you do, you never forget it. In contrast, the Navy's "Seal"and Army's "Ranger" training are specialize for advanced combat readiness in their branch and not part of their core competencies. You must be selected to go to those and very few are. The mission of all 3 trainings is to be first to the fight and ready under any geographical condition using any form of mobility available. This is why we call ourselves Marines and not soldiers and the same reason Ranger call themselves Rangers and Seals called themselves Seals. Not to disparage any other branch of our beloved armed forces. Everyone of us signed the line to give our life for a greater cause and that makes everyone who served selfless heroes. Maj Gen Roberson visited 7th Special Forces Group September 2022. During a town hall meeting, I pointed out the CDC recently stated there is no distinction between how vaxxed & unvaxxed individuals should be treated & that my religious exemption had been pending for a year. I then asked if there is any talk of removing the mandate. He responded, “have you heard of Novavax?,” to which I said, “yes sir, it uses aborted fetal cells too.” He seemed flustered at my retort. This led to a long answer on how if the US Army asks you to do something you should do it. That he doesn’t want to kick anyone out but will. That the Army is trying to find a middle ground with Novavax so the unvaxxed should take it. After that conversation I decided to leave the Army rather than wait for my exemption to get denied & risk receiving a less than honorable discharge. Even though MG Roberson probably had an amazing career for which I’m grateful, his response is indicative of careerism & moral weakness at the flag officer level. Generals facilitated in discharging & forcing out tens of thousands of service members & pushed an experimental drug after it had been shown to cause negative side effects. (See Karolina Stancik & Drew Outstanding) I ask that House Armer Services Committee Republicans hold a series of hearings to point out & fix problems from the VAX mandate & ensure it never happens again. DoD leaders should also take a hard look in the mirror to assess their part in this debacle that continues to weaken the force. Finally, please sign the DMA petition if you believe these leaders must be held accountable. Militaryaccountability.com
We join #ARSOF in bidding farewell to Maj. Gen. Patrick B. Roberson, deputy commander of U.S. Army Special Operations Command, who dedicated 37 years to the US Army - spending two decades of his esteemed career in the special operations community. His leadership and commitment to #service will be greatly missed. #SpecialForces #People #GreenBerets #DOL
