I am happy and very grateful to have the example of Vea Vecchi in my pocket as I reflect on the enduring meaning of creativity for humans, young and old. For those of you who would like to take the time to read her spoken synopsis, I have transcribed the English subtitles. I did this mostly for myself because my Italian is slow, the images are rich and, and although I have had the book for years, I appreciate so much this synopsis by and of an affectionate, poetic, inclusive, collective, caring and strongly protective person and project! Vea Vecchi, author Art and Creativity in Reggio Emilia (Routledge Contesting Early Childhood series) “Essentially, the book is the story of an encounter between a background in the arts - my background - and the educational philosophy of Reggio Emilia's municipal infant-toddler centers and preschools. An encounter... an interweaving... Which together with many people and many competencies, contributed to the birth and formation of a new and original pedagogy. (A pedagogy) ...in which poetic languages have been welcomed and considered important for richer and more complete knowledge. The book's protagonist is the atelier with its culture diffused within and outside the school filtered through daily work with teachers and children. The co-protagonists are observation and documentation of the children’s learning processes. These are all ingredients of an educational project in which aesthetic sensibility is transversal and threads through every level, positioned as a barrier to keep away all forms of violence and abuse of power.” https://lnkd.in/gfb6bTkh

Arts Education: A Journey Beyond Validation In a recent surge of inspiration, Sir Ian McKellen has championed the cause of engaging more deeply with the arts. His advocacy for singing, acting, dancing, and writing is not just a call to action but a gentle reminder of the arts' intrinsic value in nurturing the human spirit. The arts are not merely subjects to be graded or critiqued; they are gateways to self-discovery and personal growth. While the pursuit of excellence through arts education is commendable, an overemphasis on external validation through exams can overshadow the true essence of artistic endeavors. The joy found in the creative process, the insights gained from expressing oneself, and the personal satisfaction of artistic exploration are the real treasures that enrich our lives. As we reflect on Sir Ian's words, let us shift our focus from seeking approval to fostering a genuine connection with our creative cores. Let us encourage arts education that prioritizes individual expression over standardized assessment, ensuring that the journey through the arts remains a personal and enriching experience for all. Join the conversation and share how the arts have impacted your life beyond the accolades. https://lnkd.in/gqd2FGqW

Interesting findings from this Department for Culture, Media and Sport report released this week for engagement in Arts, Heritage and Culture England & Wales. If you have not got time time to read the full report here are some key stats I found interesting 🤔 🎭📚🏰🖼 🏛 ; - 91% of adults engaged with the arts at least once in the last 12 months 🎭 - The most popular way to engage with the arts physically was reading books or magazines (64%). This was followed by cinema screening of a film or movie (55%) and a theatrical performance (39%) 📚 - Respondents who did not engage with the arts were asked why they did not. The most common reasons given were: For physical engagement, ‘No reason in particular’’ (28%) and ‘I’m not interested in cultural or arts activities’ (24%). 🤷♀️ - 69% of adults reported having engaged with the heritage sector in the last 12 months. 🏰 - 46% engaged with museums and galleries in the last 12 months, a 10 percentage point increase from 2022/23 (36%) 🏛

Our next subject area is Popular Culture! 💥 🎞 🤳 🍿 Popular culture includes film, music, television, folklore, crafts, mass media, youth culture, and other forms of communication; in studying literature and popular culture, students enhance and develop critical visual learning skills as they consider what they read, watch, and listen to, while analyzing these popular mediums as reflections of society's values and ideals. Students may take courses cross-listed with Art History or Communication Arts, or attend colloquia and workshops hosted by the Center for Visual Cultures! Some Fall 2024 courses that engage with popular culture include "Beowulf to Tolkien" with Martin Foys; "Arab American Literature and Pop Culture" with Ramzi Fawaz; "Narco-Narratives" with Oscar Useche; "Fairies to Steampunk" with Nancy Marshall; "Truth and Crime" with Ralph Grunewald; "A Discovery of Witches" with Ron Harris; and more!
