Is it right to call the packaging on a burger ‘recyclable’ if there aren’t recycling facilities in your neighborhood? For the plastic container holding your noodle soup to be classified as ‘reusable,’ just how many times can you put it in the dishwasher before it starts cracking? How much of a cardboard box needs to be made from recycled materials to be dubbed ‘recyclable’? These are tricky questions. But answering them is key to making good on our commitment to ensure that the restaurants on our platform transition to sustainable packaging by 2030. That’s why I’m so pleased to see our partnership with Planet Ark Environmental Foundation, Australia’s most trusted environmental organization, formalized this week in Sydney. One of its first pieces of work is a peer-reviewed framework by the University of Technology Sydney’s Institute for Sustainable Futures that identifies whether a restaurant's packaging is considered reusable, recyclable, or compostable within the framework. It’s foundational stuff that I believe helps set standards for the entire industry. We also know that restaurants want information about how to move to more sustainable packaging, as well as financial help on the journey. To this end, we committed up to AUD $13M in funding over the next three years to help fund educational programs and subsidies for restaurants. There is a lot more work to do on packaging Thanks Bec Nyst and the team, and our partners at Planet Ark Environmental Foundation, for your leadership in this important area. #ubereats #sustainability #packaging
Planet Ark is thrilled to announce our partnership with Uber Eats Australia. Together we will assist their restaurant partners in their transition to more sustainable packaging and educate customers on how to best dispose of packaging at home 🌏🤝 Uber Eats Australia has announced a $13m fund for the next three years to help restaurants adopt sustainable options. Planet Ark has already been working closely with Uber Eats Australia on a framework from the UTS Institute of Sustainable Futures, which identifies whether a restaurants packaging meets industry leading sustainability criteria. ♻️ Going forward we intend for this collaboration to lift the standard for the sector more broadly and the transition to more sustainable packaging will contribute positively to the circular economy in Australia. #positivechange #environment
